Trump Allies Lower Bar with Debate Bias and Drug Test Demands

Former President Donald Trump and his supporters are setting the stage to lower expectations ahead of an upcoming debate, alleging bias from CNN and baselessly suggesting President Joe Biden may use performance-enhancing drugs to his advantage. This strategy aims to create a scenario where any perceived success by Biden would be undermined, effectively setting a low bar for Trump in the upcoming face-off.

Trump recently renewed his call for Biden to undergo a drug test before the debate, echoing claims by Republicans that Biden’s energetic State of the Union address was possibly drug-induced. Representatives Mariannette Miller-Meeks of Iowa and Ronny Jackson of Texas have also promoted this theory in recent interviews, with Miller-Meeks suggesting on Fox Business that Republicans anticipate Biden may be using substances during the debate. Jackson, speaking on Fox News, insisted on a pre-debate drug test for Biden.

Accusations of bias against CNN have also been prevalent among Trump’s allies. House Speaker Mike Johnson of Louisiana suggested in a radio interview that CNN would bias the debate in Biden’s favor, stating his expectation that the network would attempt to rig the event in favor of the President. Trump campaign spokesperson Karoline Leavitt fueled these assertions in an interview, criticizing CNN moderators Jake Tapper and Dana Bash for biased coverage of Trump.

Criticism of CNN’s handling of the situation escalated when anchor Kasie Hunt abruptly ended Leavitt’s interview, prompting further allegations of unfair treatment from Trump supporters, including conservative commentator Bill O’Reilly, who criticized CNN’s handling of the incident. Steve Bannon, in his podcast “War Room,” even suggested that Trump should consider skipping the debate unless CNN issues an apology to Leavitt, highlighting what he perceived as disrespectful treatment.

Trump’s calls for Biden to undergo a drug test trace back to 2020, when similar allegations were made without evidence ahead of their previous debates. In response, Biden’s campaign dismissed the claims as baseless, with spokesperson Adrienne Elrod characterizing Trump’s tactics as desperate attempts to distract from substantive issues.

Looking ahead, Trump and Biden are scheduled to face off in the first debate of the 2024 election cycle, with CNN hosting the event from its Atlanta studios. The debate will run for 90 minutes without a live audience and will be simulcast on major networks. To ensure fairness, candidates’ microphones will be muted when not speaking, with Trump granted the final word following a coin toss.

Both candidates enter the debate with polling numbers nearly tied, amidst ongoing scrutiny over their age and mental acuity, with each side highlighting the other’s verbal slip-ups on the campaign trail as evidence of potential cognitive decline.
