Harris Maintains Lead Over Trump Post-DNC, New Poll Reveals

2024 Democratic Convention

Vice President Kamala Harris’ lead over former President Donald Trump has remained unchanged following the Democratic National Convention (DNC), a recent Morning Consult survey reveals. The poll, conducted from August 23-25 among 7,829 registered voters, shows Harris maintaining a four-point advantage over Trump, with 44% supporting Harris compared to 48% for Trump. The margin of error for the poll is ±1%, and 4% of voters remain undecided while another 4% support alternative candidates.

The DNC, which saw about 14% more viewership than the Republican National Convention held in July, did not significantly impact Harris’ standing in the polls. Although the convention managed to attract a larger audience, the majority of voters did not closely follow most of the major speeches and events. Key moments from the convention that did capture substantial attention included speeches by Harris herself, former First Lady Michelle Obama, and former President Barack Obama.

Despite the overall lack of increased attention, the convention did reveal a shift in voters’ perceptions of party unity. The percentage of voters who view Democrats as “united” increased from 20% before the convention to 35% afterward. Conversely, the perception of Republican unity decreased from 36% to 25%. This suggests that while the DNC did not alter Harris’ polling numbers significantly, it may have bolstered the party’s image of cohesion.

The recent survey adds to a series of polls over the past month showing Harris erasing Trump’s lead over President Joe Biden. RealClearPolitics’ polling average indicates that Harris currently leads Trump by 1.5 points nationally, reflecting a 4.5-point shift in favor of Democrats since Biden’s departure from the race. Similarly, FiveThirtyEight’s weighted average places Harris ahead by 3.5 points.

The DNC, which took place in Chicago, followed a major shift in the campaign landscape with Biden’s exit on July 21. Harris’ candidacy has been credited with reuniting the Democratic Party, revitalizing fundraising efforts, and sparking renewed voter interest in the election. This increased attention comes after a period of historically low engagement with the Trump-Biden contest.

The convention featured a notable lineup of celebrities and performers. Oprah Winfrey, Mindy Kaling, and Kerry Washington appeared, alongside musical acts such as Pink, Stevie Wonder, and John Legend. Harris delivered a powerful closing speech on the final night of the event, consistent with tradition. In her address, she aggressively criticized Trump, focusing on his involvement in the January 6 Capitol riots, the reversal of Roe v. Wade, and his role in the collapse of a bipartisan border security package in Congress earlier this year.

Overall, while the DNC succeeded in galvanizing the Democratic base and shifting perceptions of party unity, it has not yet translated into a significant polling boost for Harris. The consistent numbers underscore the ongoing competitive nature of the presidential race, with both candidates continuing to vie for voter support as the campaign progresses.
