ChatGPT Remains No.1, But Rivals Are Closing the Gap

OpenAI’s ChatGPT remains the most widely used AI chatbot in the world, but recent market data suggests its dominance is facing stronger competition than ever before. According to analytics firms tracking app activity, ChatGPT’s share of global AI chatbot downloads has declined over the past year, even as its overall user base continues to grow. While it still leads the market by a significant margin, competing platforms are attracting increasing numbers of new users.

Among ChatGPT’s rivals, Claude has emerged as the fastest-growing AI assistant in recent months. Its share of AI chatbot downloads has expanded dramatically compared with last year, while Google’s Gemini continues to hold the second position in overall downloads. Researchers note that consumer interest is becoming more diversified, with users showing a greater willingness to test multiple AI platforms rather than relying on a single service.

A similar trend can be seen in web traffic. ChatGPT still receives the majority of visits among AI chatbot websites, but its share has decreased compared with the previous year. During the same period, both Gemini and Claude recorded substantial gains in visitor numbers, reflecting the broader shift toward a more competitive AI landscape.

Despite maintaining a large lead, ChatGPT’s growth appears to be slowing in some areas. Website traffic has remained relatively stable throughout 2026, and mobile daily active user numbers have shown only modest increases. These figures have prompted industry observers to question whether the platform is entering a more mature phase after years of rapid expansion.

Claude’s rise has been linked to a series of high-profile events that significantly increased public awareness of Anthropic, the company behind the chatbot. Public disagreements involving government contracts and the use of AI technology drew widespread media attention, bringing the company into national discussions. During that period, Claude reportedly experienced a sharp increase in downloads while some users explored alternatives to competing AI services.

Anthropic also introduced tools designed to make switching between AI assistants easier, including features that allow users to transfer information and preferences from other chatbot platforms. Such capabilities may have reduced the barriers for users considering a move from one AI service to another.

Looking ahead, both OpenAI and Anthropic are reportedly preparing for potential stock market listings. Industry analysts expect the rivalry between the two companies to intensify as they compete for users, revenue, and investor confidence in an increasingly crowded artificial intelligence market.
