Halo: Campaign Evolved Cross-Play Rules Draw Player Concerns

Microsoft’s ongoing strategy of bringing former Xbox-exclusive franchises to additional platforms is continuing with the upcoming release of Halo: Campaign Evolved on PlayStation. However, newly revealed account and subscription requirements for multiplayer and co-op play have sparked discussion among players across multiple platforms.

As Microsoft reshapes its approach to exclusivity under new leadership, some of its most recognizable franchises are reaching audiences beyond the Xbox ecosystem. The arrival of Halo: Campaign Evolved on PlayStation is one of the most notable examples of that shift. Yet details published in the game’s FAQ indicate that cross-platform play and progression will require several account connections and subscriptions, depending on where players choose to play.

According to the published requirements, any player who wants access to cross-progression features must have both a Microsoft account and an Xbox gamertag, regardless of whether they are playing on Xbox, PlayStation, or PC. Steam users will also need to link a Microsoft account to access the game.

The requirements become more complex for cooperative play. On Xbox consoles, split-screen sessions require the second player to have their own Microsoft subscription. On PlayStation 5, both players participating in split-screen must have PlayStation Plus subscriptions and linked Microsoft accounts. PlayStation Plus is also required for online cooperative gameplay.

The account requirements have generated debate among players, particularly because local co-op sessions still require online account connections. Some observers have questioned whether the policy could make PlayStation a less convenient platform for the game, while others believe the restrictions may stem from PlayStation’s own subscription policies, including the requirement that both participants maintain active PlayStation Plus memberships.

At present, there has been no official clarification regarding the reasoning behind the requirements. Industry observers have suggested the policies may be tied to existing technical systems and account-management rules rather than any effort to favor one platform over another. Nevertheless, the setup has drawn criticism from some players who view the process as unnecessarily complicated.

The discussion arrives as broader questions surrounding Microsoft’s future exclusivity strategy continue to unfold. While Halo: Campaign Evolved will be available across platforms, other upcoming titles may follow a different path. Microsoft Gaming CEO Asha Sharma recently stated that Gears of War: E-Day will remain exclusive, signaling that not every major Xbox franchise will adopt the same release strategy.

Meanwhile, the future of the mainline Halo series remains uncertain. No release window has been announced for the next major installment, leaving questions about whether future adventures featuring Master Chief will continue to appear on rival platforms or return to a more traditional Xbox-focused approach.
