As powerful electric two-wheelers continue gaining popularity in the United States, particularly among younger riders, the RCR 80V arrives as a high-performance alternative that delivers motorcycle-level speed while retaining functional pedals that classify it as an e-bike in many areas.
The growing popularity of electric models such as the Surron Light Bee and Talaria Sting has highlighted increasing demand for lightweight, high-powered machines. Industry estimates suggest the Surron Light Bee became the best-selling motorcycle of any type in the United States during 2025, with the Talaria Sting close behind. Their success has introduced thousands of new riders to powered two-wheel transport, prompting established motorcycle manufacturers to closely monitor whether these riders will eventually transition to licensed motorcycles.
Priced at $5,399, the ONYX RCR 80V is designed to bridge the gap between traditional e-bikes and road-legal motorcycles. While its pedals can propel the bike at low speeds, the machine is engineered primarily for electric performance. Weighing approximately 155 pounds, it features a 90-volt, 3,600Wh battery powering a rear hub motor capable of producing 750 watts in Eco mode and up to 21,000 watts at peak output in Hyper mode.
The RCR 80V is built more like a motorcycle than a bicycle, featuring an aluminum frame, triple-tree front forks, twin rear shock absorbers, hydraulic disc brakes and a large color touchscreen display. The suspension handled winding roads effectively, while the dual-sport version also proved capable on light off-road terrain, although rough trails eventually exceeded its suspension limits. Under repeated hard hill climbs in hot weather, the bike entered thermal protection mode to safeguard the battery and motor before returning to full performance after a short cooling period.
Although the RCR 80V qualifies as an electric bicycle in many U.S. jurisdictions, ONYX advises owners to verify local licensing and registration requirements because regulations vary. The company also says it can provide a VIN-compatible identification number for customers who need to register the vehicle as a motorcycle. Current lighting components meet European specifications rather than U.S. Department of Transportation standards, though ONYX indicated that could change in the future.
Despite its legal classification, the RCR 80V’s performance places it firmly in motorcycle territory. Its combination of rapid acceleration and high top speed makes it unsuitable for inexperienced riders once the higher-performance modes are unlocked.
