Project Hail Mary Lands on Prime Video After Unusual Streaming Rollout

Ryan Gosling’s sci-fi blockbuster Project Hail Mary is set to begin streaming on Prime Video this Friday, July 3, following an unconventional release strategy from Amazon MGM Studios. The film arrives on the platform just weeks after debuting on Amazon’s MGM+ service, marking a notable departure from the studio’s typical streaming rollout.

Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, Project Hail Mary opened in theaters on March 20 before becoming available through premium video on demand (PVOD) on May 12. It completed its domestic theatrical run on June 25 with $344 million in U.S. box office revenue. Combined with $339.5 million earned internationally, the film finished its theatrical run with a worldwide total of $683.5 million.

Unlike most Amazon MGM Studios releases, which generally move directly to Prime Video about 45 days after their theatrical debut, Project Hail Mary followed a different path. After its PVOD release, the film made its subscription streaming debut on MGM+—formerly known as EPIX—on June 18. Amazon has now confirmed that the movie will join the Prime Video library on Friday, July 3, while remaining available for purchase or rental through PVOD and continuing to stream on MGM+.

Prime Video is included with an Amazon Prime membership, which costs $14.99 per month or $139 annually. Customers who only want the streaming service can subscribe to Prime Video for $8.99 per month. The platform includes advertisements by default, while users can upgrade to the ad-free Prime Video Ultra plan for an additional $4.99 per month or $45.99 per year.

Based on Andy Weir’s bestselling novel, Project Hail Mary stars Ryan Gosling as Ryland Grace, a middle school science teacher recruited for an interstellar mission to uncover the cause of a mysterious substance threatening the Sun. During the journey, Grace encounters Rocky, a spider-like, rock-based alien voiced by James Ortiz, whose home planet faces the same existential danger as Earth. Together, they work to solve the mystery before both civilizations are destroyed.

The screenplay was adapted from Weir’s novel by Drew Goddard. The PG-13 film also features Sandra Hüller, Milana Vayntrub, Ken Leung, and Liz Kingsman. Project Hail Mary has received strong critical and audience acclaim, earning a 94% critics’ score from more than 415 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences have awarded it a 95% rating based on more than 25,000 verified reviews.
