Hugh Jackman’s The Death of Robin Hood Heads to PVOD After Flop

Hugh Jackman’s The Death of Robin Hood is making its digital debut this week after a disappointing theatrical run that fell well short of expectations. The R-rated reimagining of the legendary outlaw, written and directed by Michael Sarnoski, arrives on premium video-on-demand platforms following a worldwide box office performance that earned only $6 million against a reported $20 million production budget before marketing expenses.

Released in theaters nationwide on June 19, the film stars Jackman as an aging Robin Hood who is seriously wounded after a violent confrontation and seeks redemption while being cared for by the mysterious Sister Brigid, played by Jodie Comer. The cast also includes Bill Skarsgård, Murray Bartlett and Noah Jupe.

The movie struggled from its opening weekend, collecting $2.8 million from 1,687 North American theaters between June 19 and June 21. By Sunday, domestic earnings had reached $5.3 million, while international markets contributed more than $700,000, bringing its worldwide total to approximately $6 million.

Beginning Tuesday, July 28, The Death of Robin Hood will be available to purchase through premium video-on-demand services, including Prime Video, Apple TV, Fandango at Home and YouTube Movies & TV. The purchase price is set at $24.99, while 48-hour rentals are expected to cost $19.99.

Critical reception was mixed following the film’s theatrical release. On Rotten Tomatoes, critics awarded the movie a 66% “fresh” rating based on 157 reviews. The site’s Critics Consensus states, “Swapping out derring-do for ultraviolence, this grim take on the merry legend of Robin Hood could use more levity in its quiver, but its aim of exploring the complicated humanity behind a folk hero nails the target.”

Audience response proved less enthusiastic. The film holds a 56% “rotten” score on Rotten Tomatoes’ Popcornmeter from more than 250 audience reviews. Even so, the site’s Audience Summary highlighted Jackman’s performance, stating, “While its visceral violence unfolds brutally at a punishing pace, Hugh Jackman still hits the mark in The Death of Robin Hood.”
