Sony and Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man: Brand New Day continues to exceed expectations at the global box office, with the blockbuster now on course to become one of the highest-grossing films in history. After delivering an extraordinary $932 million opening weekend, the Destin Daniel Cretton-directed sequel crossed $1.1 billion worldwide on Tuesday and has already surpassed Toy Story 5 to become the highest-grossing film of 2026 so far.
Written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, the fourth installment featuring Sony’s Marvel Cinematic Universe version of Spider-Man is expected to enjoy another massive weekend at theaters. Current projections suggest the film could exceed $1.5 billion by the end of its second weekend, even if it experiences the sizable drop that typically follows a record-breaking debut.
The film’s exceptional weekday performance, however, has raised expectations even further. If its momentum continues, Spider-Man: Brand New Day could enter its second weekend with around $1.3 billion already earned globally. Combined with a second-weekend decline of roughly 55% to 60%, the film could finish Sunday with approximately $1.7 billion in total ticket sales.
Even under more conservative forecasts, the sequel is expected to finish its second weekend close to or above $1.5 billion worldwide. The addition of IMAX screenings is also expected to help sustain audience demand and reduce the impact of normal attendance declines.
If the movie maintains its current pace through the coming weeks, boosted by IMAX availability and continued audience interest, it could approach the $2 billion milestone and potentially challenge Titanic’s $2.26 billion worldwide total, placing it among the five highest-grossing films of all time.
The film’s performance comes after several challenging years for superhero movies following Avengers: Endgame and the COVID-19 pandemic. While Spider-Man: No Way Home nearly reached $2 billion during the pandemic, many other superhero releases struggled to cross the $500 million mark or even reach $1 billion globally.
Marvel experienced a stronger period the following year, with several films earning between $750 million and $950 million. However, from 2023 through 2025, only Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Deadpool & Wolverine delivered major blockbuster results, while the remaining MCU releases posted modest or disappointing box office returns, including at least one significant flop.
DC also faced similar difficulties during that period. Between 2020 and 2025, 10 of the studio’s 12 theatrical superhero films either underperformed or failed commercially. Only The Batman, which earned $772 million in 2022, and Superman, which grossed $618 million last year, emerged as successful releases.
Although James Gunn’s Superman successfully launched the new DC Universe, this year’s Supergirl struggled at the box office with just $126 million worldwide. Attention now shifts to Clayface, which Warner Bros. Discovery hopes can attract audiences through its connection to Batman and the growing popularity of horror films.
Despite broader challenges across the genre, Spider-Man and Batman continue to stand apart as characters capable of drawing large audiences. Their continued popularity has fueled discussion about whether so-called “superhero fatigue” accurately explains the genre’s mixed performance. The continued success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, along with Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, which is also projected to reach $1 billion while generating major Oscar buzz, suggests audiences continue to embrace stories centered on heroism and mythology.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is also expected to boost excitement for Avengers: Doomsday, arriving this Christmas with much of the original Avengers cast returning. Strong performances from both films could help propel next year’s Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse and set the stage for Avengers: Secret War in late 2027, as Marvel prepares for the next phase of its cinematic universe.
