Baby Reindeer Star Reveals Real-Life Inspiration for Netflix Series

Baby Reindeer

Richard Gadd, the lead actor in “Baby Reindeer,” has shared intimate insights into the profound personal journey that underpins the new Netflix series, adapted from his own life-altering experience with a stalker.

The seven-part limited series, a transformation of Gadd’s 2019 one-man stage play, has rapidly ascended Netflix’s Global Top 10 TV Shows chart since its April 11 premiere. The narrative delves into a simple act of kindness by Gadd towards a woman he refers to as “Martha,” which tragically transforms into a relentless nightmare of stalking and intrusion.

Speaking with Variety, Gadd revealed the complexities of translating his solo performance into a multi-episode format. “The play itself was a one-man show where I spoke about my life. It was me and a stool — Martha was a stool, and I carried the stool around the stage and I’d move her into different positions,” Gadd explained. Expanding the play into a seven-episode series, with its array of characters and intertwined plotlines, posed a significant creative and logistical challenge.

In the Netflix rendition of “Baby Reindeer,” Martha is portrayed by Jessica Gunning. While the story had to be fictionalized for legal reasons, Gadd stressed the importance of maintaining Martha’s essence, which he found in Gunning’s portrayal. “What I needed to see was the essence of the person, the kind of energy, and no one did it like Jess. She’s phenomenal,” Gadd said.

Despite the creative adaptations, Gadd emphasized that the emotional core of the story remained true to his lived experience. “It’s all emotionally 100% true, if that makes sense. It’s all borrowed from instances that happened to me and real people that I met,” he explained.

Moreover, Gadd expressed his commitment to protecting the privacy and dignity of those involved in the real-life events. “Obviously, we were very aware that some characters in it are vulnerable people, so you don’t want to make their lives more difficult,” he noted.

“All seven episodes of Baby Reindeer are streaming on Netflix,” offering viewers a gripping and emotionally resonant exploration of a deeply personal journey.
