The 2023 I/O Conference was a pivotal moment for Google’s tablet strategy, marked by the introduction of the Pixel Tablet. Now, with rumors swirling, many are speculating about the possibility of a Pixel Tablet 2. Could this be the next step in Google’s commitment to the tablet market?

Signs suggest that a Pixel Tablet 2 could indeed be on the horizon. In March, the beta release of Android 14 (QPR3 Beta 1) included a notable feature update, addressing an issue related to the AI-driven Circle to Search. While seemingly minor, this update could be laying the groundwork for a more significant tablet-focused release.

A deeper dive into the code reveals intriguing details. One standout addition is the “Adaptive Touch” setting, which promises to automatically adjust touch sensitivity based on the user’s environment, activities, and even the type of screen protector being used. While this feature is currently inactive, its inclusion hints at Google’s continued focus on enhancing the user experience, particularly in a home environment where the first Pixel Tablet aimed to excel as a “Smarthome Station.”

Another compelling clue comes in the form of two new hardware codenames, Clementine and Kiyomi. These names, inspired by sweet orange hybrids, follow the naming convention set by the first Pixel tablet, which was codenamed TangorPro based on the Tangor orange hybrid. This suggests that Clementine and Kiyomi could be the next-generation successors to the Tensor G2 Powered Pixel Tablet.

Looking back at Google’s track record, the launch of the Pixel Tablet at last year’s I/O conference signaled a significant shift in strategy. While consumers were introduced to a new Google-branded tablet with unique features like a bundled dock and speaker, Google’s partners saw a clear message of support for the tablet market and larger Android devices. This hardware release was complemented by enhanced software support for the tablet form factor, further solidifying Google’s commitment to the space.

The impact of Google’s stance in 2021 and 2022 was evident in 2023, as several Android manufacturers entered the tablet market with new offerings. It’s clear that Google’s influence played a role in these decisions, highlighting the company’s ability to shape the direction of the industry.

With the potential launch of the Pixel Tablet 2, Google has the opportunity to reaffirm its position in the tablet market and showcase its continued innovation in hardware and software. The upcoming I/O conference could serve as the perfect stage for Google to unveil its latest tablet offering, projecting confidence and support for the tablet market moving forward.
