Apple’s OpenAI Deal: Win-Win or Just Apple’s Victory?

Apple join OpenAI

During Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 10, 2024, the tech giant unveiled its partnership with OpenAI, specifically integrating OpenAI’s ChatGPT into its AI ecosystem. While this move appears advantageous for Apple on the surface, the benefits extend to OpenAI as well.

For Apple, the deal with OpenAI comes with several notable advantages. Firstly, Apple secured a commitment from OpenAI not to log any queries from Apple customers without their explicit permission, safeguarding user privacy. Additionally, the integration of ChatGPT allows for seamless querying of data and accessing information from a vast global database, enhancing the functionality of Siri and other Apple services.

On the other side, OpenAI stands to gain significantly from this collaboration. Although Apple acquired the free version of ChatGPT, OpenAI offers a paid version with advanced features and services. With access to over one billion Apple customers, OpenAI now has a substantial audience to market its premium services, potentially boosting its revenue streams significantly.

While the partnership benefits both companies, there are lingering questions about its long-term implications. Apple customers receive ChatGPT for free, but OpenAI aims to convert them into paying customers for its premium services, which start at $20 a month. Historically, Apple has taken a 30% cut of such fees from its partners, although it has not confirmed whether it will do so with OpenAI, raising uncertainties about future revenues for both companies.

Although Apple has indicated its intention to collaborate with other AI vendors in the future, the current partnership with OpenAI is not exclusive. Given Apple’s existing partnership with Google for exclusive search engine access, speculations suggest that Google’s Gemini Gen AI engine could be the next AI partnership for Apple.

Notably, Elon Musk expressed concerns about the collaboration, threatening to ban Apple products at his companies if Apple were to integrate OpenAI at the OS level. Apple clarified that ChatGPT is an add-on and not integrated into the OS. Musk’s apprehensions stem from the fact that OpenAI is now Apple’s primary Gen AI partner, potentially hindering his own AI product’s partnership opportunities with Apple. Despite this, Musk, who invested $50 million in OpenAI as a startup investor, continues to benefit from the venture.

In conclusion, the Apple/OpenAI partnership appears to be mutually beneficial. It enhances Apple’s AI capabilities while providing OpenAI with a substantial platform to showcase its services to a vast audience, ultimately benefiting both companies and Apple’s customer base.
