Backrooms Nears Digital Release After $330M Global Box Office

Backrooms

A24’s horror thriller Backrooms, directed by Kane Parsons and starring Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve, is reportedly preparing for its premium video-on-demand debut after achieving remarkable success in theaters worldwide. Although A24 has not officially confirmed the release, industry tracker When to Stream reports that the film is expected to arrive on digital platforms on July 7.

The R-rated horror feature premiered in North American theaters on May 29 and quickly became a major commercial success. Produced on a reported budget of $10 million before marketing costs, the film opened with $81.4 million from 3,442 theaters during its first weekend, immediately establishing itself as one of A24’s biggest box office performers.

The movie continues to draw audiences, earning nearly $1.3 million from 2,386 domestic theaters over the latest weekend to finish in sixth place at the box office. Its North American total has now reached $184.1 million, while international markets have contributed an additional $145.9 million, bringing its worldwide earnings to $330 million.

With that performance, Backrooms has become A24’s highest-grossing global release to date. It has surpassed previous studio hits including Marty Supreme ($191.1 million), Everything Everywhere All at Once ($147.9 million), Civil War ($127.2 million), and Materialists ($107.9 million).

According to When to Stream, the film is expected to launch on premium video-on-demand services such as Apple TV, Fandango at Home, Prime Video, and YouTube Movies & TV. The reported pricing lists the movie at $24.99 to purchase, while a standard 48-hour rental is expected to cost $19.99. The reported July 7 release date remains subject to change until officially announced by A24.

The story follows Clark, played by Chiwetel Ejiofor, a struggling used furniture store owner who discovers an interdimensional portal hidden beneath his business. The gateway leads to “The Backrooms,” a vast maze of unsettling yellow-walled liminal spaces inhabited by mysterious objects and dangerous entities.

After Clark shares his experiences with his therapist, Mary, portrayed by Renate Reinsve, she initially questions his extraordinary claims despite the detailed sketches he provides. When Clark later sends a mysterious message indicating he has become trapped inside The Backrooms, Mary enters the strange dimension herself, encountering eerie environments and terrifying creatures while searching for him.

The cast also includes Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, and Lukita Maxwell. Backrooms remains in theaters while its reported digital release is expected to follow on July 7.
