Sony has officially unveiled God of War Laufey, the next installment in the acclaimed action-adventure franchise, during its latest State of Play presentation. While excitement surrounding the game has surged following an extended gameplay showcase, Sony has not announced a release date. The company has only confirmed that the title is in development for PlayStation 5 and is currently available to wishlist on the PlayStation Store. There has been no confirmation regarding a PC version, PlayStation 4 support, or a specific launch window.
The reveal showcased roughly 20 minutes of gameplay, leading many observers to speculate that the project could arrive within the next year. However, with major releases such as Grand Theft Auto 6 expected later in 2026, questions remain about whether Sony could target a 2027 launch instead.
The new game shifts the spotlight from Kratos to Faye, also known as Laufey. According to information shared after the reveal, the story is not a prequel. In a post-presentation interview, Cory Barlog confirmed that the narrative begins immediately after Faye’s funeral, as depicted at the opening of 2018’s God of War. Faye awakens in the Everywhen, an afterlife realm inhabited by gods from multiple mythologies who are engaged in a struggle for power.
At the heart of the story is Faye’s mission to protect the plans she previously set in motion for Kratos and Atreus. As those efforts come under threat, she must battle through the Everywhen in an attempt to preserve everything she worked to build. The setting also provides an opportunity for players to learn more about the strategist whose actions shaped much of the Norse saga.
Combat in God of War Laufey has been designed to contrast sharply with Kratos’ heavier and more forceful fighting style. Developers have described Faye as a highly mobile warrior who emphasizes speed, agility, and magical abilities. Her moveset includes double jumps, aerial attacks, and combo-focused combat that draws inspiration from the franchise’s earlier Greek-era titles.
Faye’s primary weapon is a legendary sword, while the game’s central gameplay mechanic revolves around manipulating souls. Within the Everywhen, she can separate an enemy’s soul from its body and use that soul as part of combat, either by attacking it directly, launching it into other enemies, or incorporating it into combo attacks. The feature received significant attention during the gameplay demonstration.
The cast introduces several new and returning faces. Deborah Ann Woll reprises her role as Faye, having previously portrayed the character in God of War Ragnarök flashback sequences. Actor Jack Quaid, known for The Boys, voices a new character named Phranque, while Perlina Lau portrays Rue, another newcomer to the series.
Phranque, a talking gelatinous companion, emerged as one of the most talked-about characters following the reveal. Rue serves as the guardian of Faye’s sword and appears positioned to fulfill a role similar to Mimir’s, providing both narrative support and assistance during combat. Players will also encounter formidable adversaries, including Sekhmet, the Egyptian lioness goddess, Begtse, a Mongolian war deity, and a mysterious six-legged flying cat. Their inclusion highlights the game’s broader mythological scope and suggests that the Everywhen will extend beyond the Norse mythology that defined recent entries in the franchise.
