Real Madrid Sign Ibrahima Konaté on Free Transfer Deal

Real Madrid

Real Madrid have officially confirmed the signing of French defender Ibrahima Konaté, securing the center-back on a free transfer after his departure from Liverpool. The Spanish club announced the agreement in a statement released on Thursday morning, confirming that Konaté has signed a four-year contract that will keep him at the Santiago Bernabéu until June 30, 2030.

In its announcement, Real Madrid stated: “Real Madrid C. F. and Ibrahima Konaté have reached an agreement whereby he will be a Real Madrid player for the next four seasons, until June 30, 2030.” The statement did not reference Liverpool, although Konaté becomes the second high-profile player to move from Anfield to Madrid in consecutive summers.

The transfer follows Trent Alexander-Arnold’s departure from Liverpool ahead of the 2024-25 season, when the England international ended a 21-year association with his boyhood club to join the Spanish giants. Unlike Alexander-Arnold, who was not selected by England manager Thomas Tuchel for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Konaté is currently part of France’s squad in North America under Didier Deschamps.

Konaté joins fellow Real Madrid players Kylian Mbappé and Aurélien Tchouaméni in the French national team setup. However, he has faced strong competition for a starting role in France’s defense, where Arsenal’s William Saliba and Bayern Munich’s Dayot Upamecano have established themselves as the preferred central defensive pairing.

A similar challenge awaits him in Madrid. New head coach José Mourinho has several experienced defensive options available, including Antonio Rüdiger, Dean Huijsen and Éder Militão, who is currently recovering from injury.

The signing is another step in club president Florentino Pérez’s ongoing squad rebuild. Alongside the arrival of Bernardo Silva, which was announced on Wednesday, Konaté represents another major addition following promises Pérez made to supporters during his campaign for re-election.

Reports have also linked Real Madrid with Inter Milan defender Denzel Dumfries, whose reported €20 million ($23 million) release clause could make him the next arrival at the club. Dumfries would provide competition for Alexander-Arnold at right-back, while Marc Cucurella has also been mentioned among the club’s recent acquisitions.

Real Madrid may not be finished strengthening their squad before the transfer window closes. According to MARCA, Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández remains a leading target for the Spanish side. BBC Sport has reported that securing the Argentine international could require a fee of around £120 million ($159 million).
