Google Adds Selfie Video Verification for Account Recovery

Google And Youtube

Google has introduced a new biometric verification option that allows users to regain access to locked Google Accounts by recording a short selfie video instead of relying on a password or security questions. Announced on Thursday, the feature is designed to provide an additional recovery method when users are unable to access their accounts through traditional sign-in options.

The new system works by asking users to record a brief selfie video while following on-screen head movement instructions. When account recovery is needed in the future, users can record another guided selfie video, which Google’s software compares with the original recording to verify their identity. The process also requires simple live movements to confirm that the video is being captured in real time.

Google said the stored verification video is encrypted and users can delete it whenever they choose. The company also stated that it has incorporated advanced security measures to detect and block deepfake videos as well as attempts at identity impersonation.

The rollout is part of Google’s broader effort to strengthen account security. In recent months, the company has introduced AI-powered fake-call detection to help protect users from scams and has taken legal action against a Chinese cybercrime operation accused of using artificial intelligence to defraud hundreds of thousands of people, according to TechCrunch.

Although biometric authentication is already widely used across the industry, Google is positioning the selfie video feature primarily as a backup recovery tool for situations where users lose access to their phones or trusted devices. Apple has supported Face ID authentication since 2017, while Microsoft previously expanded Windows Hello facial recognition for account recovery.

The announcement also comes as Alphabet continues to report strong business growth. The company recently posted second-quarter Google Cloud revenue of $24.77 billion, representing an 82% year-over-year increase. CEO Sundar Pichai also revealed that nearly 90% of Fortune 100 companies now use Gemini Enterprise, while Google’s Gemini app has reached 950 million monthly active users.
