Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” continued its strong box office run by collecting an estimated $87 million from theaters across North America during its second weekend, exceeding industry expectations and setting a new personal record for the filmmaker. Early estimates from Hollywood trade publications placed the film ahead of Boxoffice Pro’s projected range of $75 million to $85 million, while marking only a 30% drop from its opening weekend.

The latest domestic performance, combined with an additional $215.3 million from international markets, has lifted the film’s worldwide earnings to an estimated $639.6 million. The milestone makes “The Odyssey” Christopher Nolan’s strongest second weekend ever, surpassing the $75.1 million earned by “The Dark Knight” in 2008.

The film has also secured the second-largest second weekend in box office history for an R-rated release. Only “Deadpool and Wolverine,” which generated $96 million during its second weekend in 2024, has posted a higher total.

Attention is now turning to whether “The Odyssey” can cross the $1 billion global mark and become the highest-grossing film of Nolan’s career. Both “The Dark Knight” and “The Dark Knight Rises” exceeded $1 billion worldwide, with the 2012 sequel finishing at $1.08 billion.

A significant share of the film’s revenue has come from IMAX screenings, the format long favored by Nolan. According to Variety, IMAX ticket sales have reached $140 million globally, with theaters in major cities such as Los Angeles and New York selling out weeks in advance. High demand has also fueled a resale market, where some IMAX tickets have reportedly been listed for as much as $1,000.

While “The Odyssey” remained the weekend’s top-grossing film, Disney claimed the next two positions at the box office. The live-action “Moana” reboot earned an estimated $10.5 million to finish second, while “Toy Story 5” added another $10 million in its sixth weekend. The Disney/Pixar sequel has now surpassed $1 billion worldwide, reaching an estimated $1.02 billion to become the highest-grossing film of the year so far.
