Trump Revives 2020 Election Claims, Alleges China Interference

Trump speaks on election claims

President Donald Trump on Thursday renewed his criticism of the 2020 U.S. election, accusing China of interfering in the electoral process and alleging a broad effort to conceal its involvement. During a White House speech, Trump said intelligence collected by a White House task force and the president’s intelligence advisory board indicated that China carried out what he described as the largest compromise of election data in history by allegedly gaining access to 220 million U.S. voter files.

Trump also claimed the so-called “deep state,” a term frequently used by many MAGA Republicans to describe an alleged network of influential Democrats and government insiders, had concealed China’s role. The documents Trump said he plans to release have not been independently reviewed, and the allegations presented during his remarks have not been independently verified.

CNN reported that the documents referenced by Trump had already been reviewed and that the allegations contained in them have been publicly known for years. During the speech, Trump began by highlighting his second-term agenda, including his tax legislation, lower inflation, stricter border security, TrumpAccounts investment accounts and the TrumpRx pharmaceutical supermarket, before shifting his focus to election integrity.

Although Trump questioned the reliability of the U.S. election system with broad allegations, he stopped short of saying the alleged Chinese activity changed the outcome of the 2020 presidential election. Trump has repeatedly made misleading claims about the 2020 election since his defeat to former President Joe Biden.

Rep. Joseph Morelle, D-N.Y., strongly rejected Trump’s claims during an interview with C-SPAN, saying, “It’s the rantings of a pathetic, unserious person… the president knows virtually nothing about the American elections system.” Morelle added that Trump “has no idea what he’s talking about… there is no basis in fact to almost anything he said.”

Trump also renewed his call for the Senate to approve the SAVE Act, legislation that would require documentary proof of U.S. citizenship for voter registration. The measure remains stalled because it requires Democratic support to overcome the Senate’s 60-vote filibuster threshold, which Trump has repeatedly urged lawmakers to eliminate.

Several major television networks, including ABC, NBC and CNN, reportedly chose not to broadcast Trump’s speech on their primary channels. While the networks did not publicly explain their decisions, some Democratic lawmakers had encouraged a boycott, arguing the speech could spread misleading information about U.S. elections just months before the November midterm elections.

Trump had previewed the address earlier in the week, promising “really, really big news” and indicating he would discuss election integrity. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said before the speech that “the truth is, nobody knows yet what President Trump will ultimately say,” adding that he could also address the economy and the war with Iran. Intelligence officials have previously stated they found “no indications” that foreign interference altered the outcome of the 2020 election, and Trump’s earlier legal efforts to overturn the election results were repeatedly rejected in court due to a lack of evidence.
