Angie Nixon Wins Florida Democratic Senate Primary Upset

Florida state Rep. Angie Nixon, a democratic socialist, has won the Democratic Senate primary in Florida, defeating Alex Vindman in a major upset that adds another left-leaning candidate to the growing list of primary winners who have overcome better-funded opponents.

The Associated Press called the race at 8 p.m. ET on Tuesday, with Nixon receiving 56.0% of the vote and nearly all ballots counted. Vindman, who became nationally known after testifying against President Donald Trump during his first impeachment trial in 2019, received 44%.

Nixon’s victory came despite a major financial disadvantage. Vindman raised more than $16 million during the campaign, making him substantially better funded than Nixon. Nixon said after the result that her campaign had been outspent 16 to 1 but still defeated what she called the political establishment.

“We have proved that everyday people are more powerful than corporations and billionaires,” Nixon told supporters after the race was called. She said the campaign had faced millions of dollars in outside spending and described the result as a victory for “the little guys and girls” and hardworking Floridians, adding that the outcome had “sent a shock wave to the Washington, D.C., establishment.”

Nixon will now face Republican Sen. Ashley Moody in the November general election. Moody was appointed to the Senate last year after Marco Rubio left the chamber to become secretary of state. The winner of the election will serve the remainder of Rubio’s Senate term.

Despite Nixon’s primary victory, Republicans remain heavily favored in the general election. Florida is a strongly Republican state, and The Cook Political Report, Larry Sabato’s Crystal Ball and Nate Silver’s Silver Bulletin have each rated the Senate contest either Safely Republican or Likely Republican.

Betting markets also point toward a Republican victory. Polymarket currently gives Republicans an 89.6% chance of winning the Florida Senate race, while Kalshi bettors put the odds at 92%.
