US Cautions Israel on Iran, Commits to Security

Netanyahu in Berlin

The United States has reportedly issued a private warning to Israel against retaliating against Iran following a recent drone attack. While National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby neither confirmed nor denied President Joe Biden’s warning to Israel, reports suggest that a proposed retaliatory strike was called off after Biden’s phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Saturday night.

Kirby, speaking on Meet the Press, emphasized that Israel’s response to the attack would be its own decision, stating that the U.S. respects Israel’s autonomy and is not seeking a war with Iran. He also noted that the Pentagon remains vigilant against threats to U.S. troops or facilities in the Middle East, confirming that no attacks have occurred thus far.

In a statement, Biden reaffirmed the U.S.’s unwavering commitment to Israel’s security, following his conversation with Netanyahu. The White House praised Israel’s successful destruction of most of the drones, with U.S. assistance, stating that it sent a clear message to its adversaries.

However, Biden reportedly informed Netanyahu that the U.S. would not support an offensive strike against Iran. Israel’s war cabinet is scheduled to meet to discuss its response to the attack, while Iran’s U.N. mission warned against further escalation, promising a severe response.

On the diplomatic front, the Group of Seven (G7) is set to meet to coordinate a response to the Iranian attack, with Biden personally engaging in diplomatic efforts, according to Kirby.

In a separate development, Pope Francis urged both nations to halt hostilities, warning against actions that could escalate violence. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi expressed deep concern over the attack, calling on Israel to exercise restraint. Wang also urged the U.N. to implement a ceasefire resolution in Gaza to prevent further escalation.

The recent tensions stem from an April 1 airstrike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Syria, which Iran blamed on Israel. The Iranian military responded with a drone attack on Israel, with most drones intercepted before reaching their target. One drone caused minor damage, injuring a seven-year-old girl in the Negev Desert.
