Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon returns with a second installment, Rebel Moon – Part 2: The Scargiver, now streaming on Netflix. Among the familiar faces in the film is the warrior leader Kora, portrayed by Sofia Boutella. Kora leads a band of warriors in their battle against evil, a role she first took on in Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire. If Kora looks familiar, it’s because Boutella has appeared in several high-profile projects over the years.
Boutella’s breakout role came in the 2014 hit Kingsman: The Secret Service, where she played Gazelle, a deadly personal assistant to the villain Richmond Valentine. Gazelle’s distinctive feature is the absence of her lower legs, which have been replaced by blades, giving her a striking appearance reminiscent of the “blade runner” Oscar Pistorius.
Kingsman wasn’t Boutella’s only venture into playing formidable characters. She also portrayed Jaylah, an alien adversary in 2016’s Star Trek Beyond, and starred opposite Charlize Theron in 2017’s Atomic Blonde, playing a French undercover agent named Delphine Lasalle.
In 2017, Boutella starred alongside Tom Cruise in The Mummy, a film that was intended to launch Universal Studios’ Dark Universe of monster movies but was ultimately a commercial disappointment, leading to the cancellation of the shared universe.
Boutella’s career began as a dancer in music videos, working with artists like Madonna and appearing in the late Michael Jackson’s video for Hollywood Tonight. She transitioned to acting with roles in films like Street Dance 2 and Hotel Artemis before landing the lead role of Kora in Netflix’s Rebel Moon series.
Most recently, Boutella appeared in the Foo Fighters’ music video Shame Shame and the Netflix series Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities. She also reunited with Kingsman director Matthew Vaughn for a supporting role in the spy thriller Argylle.
