Mackie’s MobileMix: Portable Studio Anywhere

Mackie's MobileMix

In a musical landscape where spontaneity and creativity often collide, Mackie’s MobileMix emerges as a beacon of innovation. Aiming to capture the essence of live performances in remote settings, this portable analog mixer embodies the spirit of adventure and artistry that defined Michelle Shocked’s iconic “Texas Campfire Tapes.”

Imagine a scenario: a group of musicians gathered around a crackling campfire in the Texan countryside, the stars overhead providing the only stage lighting. With the MobileMix, this picturesque scene can be transformed into a professional recording studio on the go.

At its core, the MobileMix is designed for flexibility and ease of use. Powered by a USB power bank or adapter, it can handle up to eight input channels, accommodating various instruments and microphones. The mixer’s two XLR/Combo inputs feature Hi-Z switches, ideal for plugging in guitars or other instruments, while also offering 48V Phantom Power for condenser microphones.

The magic of the MobileMix lies in its simplicity and versatility. Channels 3/4 can function as mono signals or a stereo input, catering to different recording needs. Channels 5/6 offer a 3.5mm TRRS input, perfect for connecting digital recorders or smartphones, allowing for seamless integration of external devices.

But the MobileMix doesn’t stop there. It also features channels 7/8 with a stereo and two-way Bluetooth channel, enabling users to stream backing tracks from their phones or even take phone calls without disrupting the recording process. The Bluetooth feature includes Mix Minus technology, ensuring that callers do not hear an echo of their own voice.

In terms of control and customization, the MobileMix offers a range of options. Each channel is equipped with a rotary gain control and shelving EQ at 12kHz and 80Hz, allowing users to fine-tune the sound to their liking. The EQ circuits are based on the designs of Cal Perkins, renowned for their ability to deliver a classic British sound with 15dB of boost and cut.

Moreover, the MobileMix boasts an FX feature with Plate, Hall, and Reverb settings, adding depth and richness to recordings. The amount of FX can be adjusted separately for each channel, offering a high degree of control over the final mix. A Master FX Level control allows users to adjust the overall amount of FX applied across all channels.

Monitoring and output options are also well-considered in the MobileMix. It features a 3.5mm stereo output with a volume setting for the main headphone output, as well as two additional headphone outputs for musicians or performers to monitor their performance. The Mix Level can be set independently for both monitor outputs, and a blend rotary control creates a unique blend of inputs ideal for recording overdubs.

In terms of connectivity, the MobileMix offers a secondary output for sending the mix to a camera or digital recorder via a 3.5mm TRRS jack. The levels of the inputs can be monitored using peak meters set across two columns with four LEDs each, ensuring that levels are kept in check to avoid clipping.

Despite its compact size, the MobileMix is built to last. The sturdy construction and thoughtful design make it a reliable companion for mobile recording. A removable plate on the underside of the mixer provides space to accommodate most smartphone power banks, ensuring uninterrupted recording sessions.

While the MobileMix does not feature a USB interface for direct recording to a computer, its purely analog nature sets it apart from other portable mixers. The absence of a menu or screen adds to its charm, offering a hands-on, intuitive recording experience.

In conclusion, the Mackie MobileMix is a testament to the brand’s commitment to innovation and quality. Priced at $229.99 and shipping now, it offers exceptional value for musicians, podcasters, and recording enthusiasts seeking a portable, high-quality recording solution. Whether capturing the magic of a live performance or recording on the fly, the MobileMix delivers professional results in a compact package.
