Atlanta Repairs Water Main, Boil Water Advisory Remains

Atlanta

Atlanta has successfully repaired a major water main break that occurred early Saturday morning. However, despite this fix, water services remain disrupted, and a boil water advisory remains in effect for the city. The issues began when a series of breaks in water mains caused widespread water service problems and prompted cancellations across much of Atlanta, including the entire downtown area.

The initial break was reported around 8:30 a.m. on Friday at a location where three water mains intersect. Additional breaks were reported throughout the day, leading the Department of Watershed Management to issue a boil water advisory as a precautionary measure. This advisory allowed water services to continue until 5 p.m. on Friday to give residents time to prepare for repairs. Despite efforts to fix the issues, water service disruptions persisted for large parts of the city.

The first water main break was repaired by early Saturday, according to a city press release. However, water service restoration was still underway, and the boil water advisory remained in place. The situation forced the closure of local businesses and attractions and led to the cancellation of several events, including a Megan Thee Stallion concert at State Farm Arena, which has been postponed until Sunday. A planned Saturday show is still scheduled to proceed, with the arena in communication with the city regarding the situation.

In response to the advisory, Atlanta’s Watershed Management Department has advised all residents and property owners who have experienced water outages or low pressure to boil water or use bottled water for drinking, cooking, preparing baby food, or brushing teeth. Water should be boiled for at least one minute before use. Residents are also urged not to drink water from public water fountains. While water is safe for “vigorous hand washing or showers with soap and tap water,” it should still be boiled if used for handwashing ahead of food preparation.
