NBA Finals Hit 3-Year Viewer Low, Celtics Triumph Over Mavericks

NBA

The NBA Finals experienced its lowest viewership in three years, with an average of 11.3 million viewers per game for the series between the Boston Celtics and Dallas Mavericks. This marks a decline from the previous two years, with 2023 averaging 11.6 million viewers and 2022 averaging 12.4 million. Despite this, the numbers were higher than the 2021 series, which had 9.9 million viewers, and the 2020 series, which had 7.5 million viewers.

The final game of the Celtics-Mavericks series had an average of 12.2 million viewers, peaking at 13.2 million. Game 4, where the Mavericks dominated the Celtics 122-84, drew about 9.6 million viewers, the second-lowest for a game 4 in NBA Finals history, behind a pandemic-era game in 2020 that had 7.54 million viewers.

Games 1 through 3 also had lower viewership compared to pre-pandemic standards, averaging around 10.99 million, 12 million, and 11.4 million viewers, respectively. Before the pandemic, average series ratings were typically higher than 16 million viewers.

The Boston Celtics have won 18 championships, the most of any NBA team, surpassing the Los Angeles Lakers, which have 17 titles. In terms of valuation, the Celtics are estimated to be worth about $4.7 billion, making them the fourth most valuable team in the NBA. The Dallas Mavericks are estimated to be worth about $4.5 billion, ranking seventh in the league.

The decline in viewership for the NBA Finals is part of a larger trend of lower ratings for major TV events compared to pre-pandemic levels. Factors include a shift away from linear television and increased competition from streaming services. However, the NFL continues to maintain strong ratings despite these challenges.

The Celtics’ victory in the championship came 16 years after their last win in 2008. Led by players like Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, the Celtics had a remarkable season with a 64-18 record. They beat the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference finals and overcame challenges from the Cleveland Cavaliers and Miami Heat to reach the NBA Finals.
