Tom Hardy’s ‘The Bikeriders’ Streaming on Peacock August 9

The Bikeriders

Universal Pictures has announced that “The Bikeriders,” a high-octane motorcycle drama featuring Tom Hardy, Austin Butler, and Jodie Comer, is set to hit Peacock on August 9. The film first premiered in theaters on June 21 and was subsequently made available for digital streaming through premium video on demand (PVOD) on July 9. Now, it will be accessible to Peacock subscribers for streaming video on demand.

In “The Bikeriders,” Tom Hardy stars as Johnny, a Chicago truck driver who establishes the Vandals motorcycle club during the 1960s, inspired by the Marlon Brando classic “The Wild One.” The film explores Johnny’s journey from a working-class man to the leader of a motorcycle club as he navigates the challenges of the era.

The narrative unfolds through a series of flashbacks spanning the 1960s and 1970s, depicting the evolution of motorcycle clubs into gangs against the backdrop of a changing cultural landscape. Austin Butler plays Benny, a key member of the Vandals MC, who is married to Kathy, portrayed by Jodie Comer. Kathy’s perspective is central to the storyline, as she recounts the history of the Vandals to interviewer and photographer Danny Lyon, played by Mike Faist. Lyon later transforms the story of the Vandals into a book, adding a layer of documentary-like authenticity to the film.

Universal Pictures, which owns the streaming service Peacock, is leveraging its platform to bring the film to a wider audience. As part of its strategy to cater to both digital and physical media consumers, the studio has also scheduled the release of “The Bikeriders” on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD for August 13. These physical formats will come with additional bonus features, offering fans a more immersive experience of the film.

In terms of reception, “The Bikeriders” has performed moderately well at the box office. According to The Numbers, the film has generated $21.3 million in domestic earnings and $13.3 million internationally, leading to a total worldwide box office revenue of $34.4 million. This financial performance places the film in a promising position, given its production budget, which Deadline estimates to be between $30 million and $40 million before accounting for prints and advertising costs.

Critics have responded favorably to the film, with Rotten Tomatoes awarding it an 81% “fresh” rating based on 258 reviews. The audience reaction is also positive, with a 74% “fresh” Audience Score from over 500 verified ratings on Rotten Tomatoes. This critical acclaim underscores the film’s successful blend of historical drama and character-driven storytelling.

For those who prefer digital formats, “The Bikeriders” remains available on various PVOD platforms, including Prime Video, AppleTV+, and VUDU. This continued availability allows viewers who may not have Peacock or prefer digital rentals and purchases to still experience the film.

Directed and written by Jeff Nichols, “The Bikeriders” also features performances by Michael Shannon and Norman Reedus, contributing to its star-studded cast. The film’s depiction of motorcycle culture and its historical context makes it a notable addition to the genre, offering a mix of action, drama, and historical reflection.

With its upcoming debut on Peacock and the subsequent release of physical copies, “The Bikeriders” is poised to reach an even broader audience, continuing its journey from theaters to home entertainment.
