Infinix Unveils BMW-Themed Note 40, Starting at $209

Asian phone brands collaborating with luxury names is a well-trodden path, yet such partnerships are rarely seen at this price point. Infinix, relatively new on the global smartphone stage, is making a notable entry with its BMW-themed Note 40 series, demonstrating that affordable luxury can be achieved without breaking the bank.

Asian manufacturers frequently release special edition phones that essentially feature a fresh coat of paint and the logo of a renowned brand. For instance, at the recent Olympics, every athlete was gifted an “Olympic Edition” Galaxy Z Flip 6, while earlier this year, I reviewed a Porsche-branded Honor foldable phone.

Infinix, headquartered in Shenzhen, China, is embracing this trend by partnering with BMW Designworks to produce a branded version of its Note 40 series. Unlike other brands that limit their special editions to their highest-tier models—often pushing the price upwards—Infinix is making this collaboration available across the entire Note 40 lineup. This includes the entry-level model starting at just $209.

I tested the top-of-the-line Pro Plus variant, which remains competitively priced at $329. Despite its affordable price, the Pro Plus offers a 6.8-inch display with a refresh rate of up to 120Hz, a Dimensity 7020 processor, and a 4,600 mAh battery, all housed in a sleek 8.1mm thick body. The build quality is impressive, and the phone exudes a flagship feel.

The camera setup, however, is a mixed bag. It includes a 108-megapixel main sensor, accompanied by two 2-megapixel sensors that offer little practical value. The absence of an ultra-wide lens or a zoom function is notable, especially considering the current competitive market.

So, what distinguishes this phone as a “BMW” product? The unique design elements created in collaboration with BMW Designworks are a key feature. The phone’s rear panel sports a subtle textured pattern reminiscent of a car’s wing, with bespoke color, material, and finish.

I also tested the standard version of this phone without the BMW branding and found its performance to be satisfactory for its price range. The BMW-themed edition, however, does not differ in terms of performance. It features BMW Designworks-themed wallpaper and app icons, adding a touch of luxury without altering the phone’s functionality.

In summary, the BMW-themed Infinix Note 40 offers a blend of luxury aesthetics and affordability. With a starting price of $209 and a maximum of $329 for the top model, it provides an accessible entry point for collectors and enthusiasts of luxury car brands. The BMW branding adds a distinctive touch, though it primarily serves as a superficial enhancement rather than a significant functional upgrade.
