2024 Torsus Praetorian: Off-Road Capability Redefined

Torsus Praetorian

Driving a bus is not an everyday experience, and when it comes to off-road buses, the opportunity becomes even rarer. Torsus, a company renowned for its niche vehicles, has introduced the Praetorian model, which is engineered for extreme environments where traditional buses dare not venture. Built on a robust MAN truck chassis and utilizing MAN’s engine and powertrain components, the 2024 Praetorian is designed to tackle the toughest terrains, from mining sites to dense forests and rugged mountainous regions.

The Praetorian’s design is tailored for off-road capability, reflecting its intended usage. Notably, the driver’s seat is positioned just ahead of the front axle, offering a unique perspective; drivers can clear obstacles before the tires make contact. This configuration may feel unusual for those accustomed to sitting behind the front axle in standard vehicles, but it enhances visibility and control in challenging conditions. Equipped with permanent four-wheel drive and locking differentials on both axles, the Praetorian is well-prepared for slippery and uneven surfaces. These locking differentials can be easily activated or deactivated via a dial, providing flexibility when navigating tight corners or tricky obstacles.

The vehicle features a 12-speed semi-automatic gearbox that caters to both on-road and off-road driving needs. In automatic mode, the gearbox excels on smooth or paved surfaces, while the manual mode allows drivers to take control when tackling rugged trails. Gear changes are intuitively managed via a stalk on the right side of the steering column: pulling towards the driver shifts up, while pushing away shifts down. While it may take some practice to master the gear selection for varied terrain, the overall driving experience is solid and confidence-inspiring, showcasing the vehicle’s robust design and off-road prowess.

The interior of the 2024 Torsus Praetorian offers a blend of rugged functionality and comfort. As it shares components with MAN trucks, the driver’s cab features a familiar layout, reminiscent of traditional trucks. Although climbing into the vehicle requires some effort, each door is equipped with a fold-out step to ease entry. Passenger access is facilitated by a middle door that leads into the bus’s main cabin. In its standard configuration, the Praetorian seats 34 passengers, plus one driver. The interior space is surprisingly comfortable, providing a welcoming contrast to the often harsh environments where the bus is expected to operate. For those looking to customize their Praetorian, Torsus offers a bare interior version, allowing buyers to adapt the vehicle to their specific requirements, whether for recreational use or specialized cargo transport.

Specialized vehicles often come with a hefty price tag, and the Torsus Praetorian is no exception. The starting price for the bus with seating for 34+1 passengers is $265,000. If buyers prefer a blank interior for customization, the cost drops to $250,000. This flexibility empowers customers to create an extreme off-road recreational vehicle or develop tailored storage solutions for unique cargo. Moreover, given its foundation on MAN architecture, the Praetorian is backed by a generous six-year or 900,000 km warranty for the drivetrain, enhancing peace of mind for potential buyers. The vehicle can also be serviced through MAN’s extensive dealer network, ensuring support and maintenance are readily accessible.

Customers seeking to enhance the functionality of their Praetorian can choose from an array of rugged features. Options include a rear ladder for roof access, a roof-mounted luggage rack, front and rear winches, under-run protection, and work lights. Additionally, buyers can opt for a fixed rear wall or customizable opening doors to suit their specific needs. The Torsus Praetorian is powered by a robust 6.9-liter diesel engine, delivering an impressive 290 bhp and a staggering 848 lb-ft of torque. With a ground clearance of 35 cm and a fording depth of 68 cm, this bus is equipped to handle various off-road conditions without compromising performance or safety.

The 2024 Torsus Praetorian stands out as a remarkable off-road bus designed for extreme environments. With its robust construction, advanced drivetrain technology, and customizable interior options, it caters to a niche market that demands both durability and versatility. Whether traversing the rugged terrain of a mining site or navigating dense forest trails, the Praetorian offers a driving experience unlike any other, making it a noteworthy addition to the world of specialized vehicles.
