Van Dijk’s Resurgence Powers Liverpool’s Title Push

Liverpool vs Real Madrid - UCL 2024/25 MD5

Virgil van Dijk is defying the usual narrative of footballers fading in their early thirties. At 33 years old, many expected the Dutch center-back to be nearing the end of his prime, especially following an injury-hit period and some concerns about his pace. But rather than slowing down, van Dijk is showing that he is still one of the finest central defenders in the Premier League. His performances this season have been exceptional, and he is a central figure in Liverpool’s push for the Premier League title.

Much has been made of Mohamed Salah’s contributions to Liverpool’s remarkable start to the season. The Egyptian forward has been in blistering form, scoring 10 goals in just 12 league games. His influence on the team is undeniable, and many believe he is playing some of the best football of his career as speculation about his future swirls. Salah has become the face of Liverpool’s 2024 campaign and has been key to their charge to the top of the table. Yet, while Salah’s attacking prowess cannot be understated, it’s van Dijk’s steadying influence at the back that has proven equally crucial to Liverpool’s success.

Van Dijk has been the bedrock of the Liverpool defense, providing the stability that has allowed the Reds to mount a serious challenge for the title. His leadership on the pitch has been pivotal, helping his side to concede the fewest goals in the Premier League this season—only eight goals in 12 games. The Dutchman has found a way to regain his best form despite the inevitable signs of age creeping in. Many fans and pundits alike had feared that he had lost a yard of pace following a serious knee injury during the 2020/21 season. Van Dijk missed a large chunk of that campaign, and his return to full fitness was a long process. The injury raised doubts about his ability to return to his previous levels of dominance, but he has proved the skeptics wrong.

When Jurgen Klopp left Liverpool at the end of last season, there were those who wondered if van Dijk would follow suit and leave Anfield as well. With the team undergoing a managerial change and the club in a period of transition, some saw van Dijk’s future as uncertain. Yet under new manager Arne Slot, van Dijk has returned to being one of the best defenders in the league, showing that his experience and leadership are invaluable to the team. His strong performances have helped Liverpool regain their defensive solidity, and he’s playing with a level of composure that has been a hallmark of his career.

One of the main talking points surrounding van Dijk’s future, however, is his contract situation. His current deal is set to expire next summer, and while there has been little public talk of a potential move away, there are ongoing discussions about his future. Slot, when asked about the contract situation, emphasized that the issue only becomes problematic when players stop performing at the level that van Dijk is showing. “Contract situation becomes a problem if players don’t perform as well as they are now,” Slot remarked. He further highlighted that van Dijk, along with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Salah, are all out of contract next summer. Despite the uncertainty surrounding their futures, the trio has been in excellent form, and Liverpool’s focus remains on the present.

Slot explained that while discussions about contracts are ongoing, his primary concern is to continue getting the best out of his players on the pitch. “At the moment, all three are in a good place, performing really, really well,” Slot said, referring to van Dijk, Salah, and Alexander-Arnold. “There are ongoing discussions with the people Virgil says he has to talk to, and that’s not me, as you know. I talk to him about other things.” Van Dijk, in particular, has made it clear that he isn’t yet ready to commit to any future decisions until his contract situation is sorted out. But, for now, the focus is on his performances, which continue to be at the highest level.

Liverpool’s strong start to the season has been driven by the combined efforts of key players like Salah, van Dijk, and Alexander-Arnold, and Slot is getting the best out of a squad that was built by Klopp. The defensive stability that van Dijk provides has been crucial in ensuring that Liverpool has been able to compete at the highest level in both domestic and European competitions. Despite being in the twilight years of his career, van Dijk is playing like a man in his prime, and his leadership on the field has been a key component of Liverpool’s title charge.

As the season progresses, all eyes will be on Liverpool’s defensive performances and how van Dijk continues to lead from the back. With the title race heating up and the Champions League campaign also in full swing, van Dijk’s experience and composure could prove to be the difference-maker. His ability to marshal the defense, win aerial duels, and read the game with such clarity has made him one of the top central defenders in the world. While much of the attention will remain on Salah’s goal-scoring exploits, it is van Dijk’s defensive prowess that could ultimately play the most important role in Liverpool’s title aspirations.

For now, van Dijk is back to his best, performing at a level that many thought was behind him. Whether he stays at Liverpool beyond the summer remains to be seen, but his current form shows that he is still capable of playing at the highest level for some time yet. Liverpool will be hoping that the Dutchman can continue to lead them through a successful season as they aim to challenge for trophies both domestically and in Europe.
