Billionaire Heir and Former Cargill Executive Austen S. Cargill II Maintains $4.35 Billion Net Worth in 2025

Austen Stowell Cargill II, the 73-year-old billionaire heir and former vice president of Cargill, continues to maintain his substantial wealth with a current net worth of $4.35 billion as of late 2024. Born in 1951, the great-grandson of Cargill founder William Wallace Cargill has built a diverse career spanning corporate leadership, marine biology, and ranch ownership.

After earning his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Minnesota and completing his doctorate at Oregon State University, Cargill II began his professional journey as a marine biologist at Cargill. His career at the family business saw significant progression, leading to his appointment to the board of directors in 1995 and subsequent role as vice president until 2001.

Beyond his work at Cargill, he served on the board of GalaGen, a NASDAQ-traded company specializing in dietary supplements for gastrointestinal diseases, from 1999 until the company’s bankruptcy in 2002. His scientific contributions include co-authoring research on lipids as feeding stimulants for shredding aquatic insects, published in Freshwater Biology in 2006.

Currently residing in Livingston, Montana, Cargill II maintains a relatively private lifestyle. In 2001, he made headlines by purchasing the North Ranch in Paradise Valley, Montana, a property previously owned by the Church Universal and Triumphant. Known for his outdoor pursuits, he regularly engages in ruffed grouse hunting in South Dakota.

Despite his family’s prominence in the agricultural industry, Cargill II has chosen a path that combines business acumen with scientific expertise. The divorced father of two represents a unique blend of corporate heritage and academic achievement, contributing to both the family business and scientific research.

His current net worth reflects the continued success and private ownership of Cargill, which remains one of the largest privately held corporations in the United States. While maintaining a lower public profile than some other billionaires, Cargill II’s influence in both the corporate and scientific communities continues to shape his legacy.
