Madhur Bajaj: A Legacy of Leadership and Philanthropy

Madhur Bajaj, born on August 19, 1952, has been a pivotal figure in India’s industrial landscape, particularly in the automotive sector. An alumnus of the prestigious Doon School in Dehradun, he pursued a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Sydenham College, Mumbai, in 1973. Furthering his education, he completed an MBA at the International Institute of Management Development (IMD) in Lausanne, Switzerland, in 1979.

In January 2024, after a commendable 44-year tenure, Madhur Bajaj resigned from his position as Vice Chairman and Non-Executive Director of Bajaj Auto Ltd., citing health reasons. In his resignation letter, he expressed a desire to pursue other interests and commitments, marking the end of an era for the company.

Throughout his illustrious career, Madhur Bajaj held significant roles across various Bajaj Group companies. He served as Vice Chairman of Bajaj Auto Limited, a leader in the motorized two and three-wheeler sectors, and was also the Chairman of Maharashtra Scooters Limited. Additionally, he held directorships in Bajaj Electricals Limited, Bajaj Finance Limited, and several other group companies.

Beyond his corporate responsibilities, Madhur Bajaj was actively involved in several industry associations. He was the Past President of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), the apex association of Indian automobile manufacturers, and the Past President of the Mahratta Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture (MCCIA), the leading industry association of Pune. He also served as the Chairman of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Western Region and was a National Council Member of CII until March 2024.

Madhur Bajaj’s contributions extended beyond the corporate realm into philanthropy. He was deeply involved in the philanthropic work of the Bajaj Group, focusing on integrated development of villages and water conservation. He believed that “the secret of living is giving” and found his philanthropic endeavors more fulfilling. As a Trustee of the Jamnalal Bajaj Foundation, he played a role in recognizing individuals and organizations contributing to social development.

His wife, Mrs. Kumud Bajaj, also shared his commitment to social causes. She was the Founder Trustee of Nath Valley School in Aurangabad, established in 1990, aiming to promote excellence in education. Under her leadership, the school evolved into one of India’s highly reputed institutions. Additionally, she served as the Chairperson of the 250-bedded Kamalnayan Bajaj Hospital in Aurangabad, contributing significantly to healthcare services in the region.

Madhur Bajaj’s departure from Bajaj Auto marked a significant transition for the company. In response, the board approved the re-appointment of Pradip Shah as an independent director for a second five-year term starting April 1, 2024, and recommended the appointment of Vinita Bali as an independent director for a five-year term beginning the same date. These appointments aimed to ensure continuity and bring fresh perspectives to the company’s leadership.

In summary, Madhur Bajaj’s legacy is characterized by his leadership in the automotive industry, his active participation in industry associations, and his unwavering commitment to philanthropy. His contributions have left an indelible mark on the corporate and social fabric of India.
