Azim Premji: The Visionary Philanthropist and Business Icon of India

Azim Premji stands as one of the most influential and respected figures in the landscape of Indian industry and philanthropy. Often referred to as the Czar of the Indian IT industry, Premji’s story is not just one of financial success but a tale of transformation, values, and purpose-driven leadership. Born on July 24, 1945, in Bombay (now Mumbai), India, into a well-to-do Gujarati Muslim family, Azim Hashim Premji inherited his father’s business at a very young age. What he did with that legacy has since become part of Indian corporate lore.

Premji’s father, Mohamed Hashim Premji, was a noted businessman and the founder of Western India Vegetable Products Ltd., a company focused on hydrogenated cooking fats. The company, which would later become Wipro, was well-established when Azim was a student. He was pursuing an engineering degree in electrical engineering at Stanford University when, in 1966, at the age of 21, he was suddenly called back to India due to the untimely death of his father. At this young age, Azim Premji took over the reins of the family business. Many skeptics doubted whether someone so young and inexperienced could lead a company, especially in a highly conservative business environment, but Premji proved his critics wrong.

What followed was a remarkable transformation. Under Premji’s visionary leadership, Wipro diversified from being a manufacturer of vegetable oil to becoming one of the leading IT and software services companies in the world. In the 1980s, as India’s economy began to open up and the global demand for software services grew, Premji recognized the opportunity and began shifting Wipro’s focus toward IT. He steered the company into the rapidly growing technology sector, building a reputation for excellence, reliability, and innovation. Wipro quickly rose to become a formidable player in the global tech arena, offering software services, IT consulting, and outsourcing solutions.

Despite his success in business, what sets Azim Premji apart is his deep-rooted sense of responsibility and humility. As his wealth grew, so did his commitment to social causes. Premji has always believed in the idea that wealth must serve society. This philosophy drove him to become one of the most generous philanthropists not only in India but in the world. In 2001, he established the Azim Premji Foundation with a focus on improving the quality of education in India, especially in rural and underprivileged regions. The foundation works with state governments, schools, and local communities to bring systemic changes in educational practices and governance. It runs the Azim Premji University, which aims to develop professionals committed to social change.

What makes Premji’s philanthropy extraordinary is not just the scale but the way it is practiced. He believes in hands-on involvement, rigorous planning, and long-term impact. His approach to giving is methodical, much like his approach to business. In 2010, he committed $2 billion to his foundation, and in subsequent years, he continued to donate significant portions of his wealth. In 2013, he became the first Indian to sign the Giving Pledge, an initiative by Bill Gates and Warren Buffett that encourages billionaires to give away the majority of their wealth during their lifetime. By 2019, Premji had donated more than half of his stake in Wipro to philanthropic causes, a donation valued at over $21 billion, making it one of the largest donations of its kind globally.

Despite his immense wealth, Premji leads a life marked by simplicity and integrity. He is known for his modest lifestyle, his dislike of extravagance, and his emphasis on ethics and governance. Stories about him flying economy class, driving a simple car, and staying in budget hotels have become legendary. To his employees and the wider business community, he represents a rare blend of intelligence, pragmatism, and values.

Azim Premji’s legacy extends beyond his business empire and philanthropy. He has been a vocal advocate for corporate governance, transparency, and ethical leadership. He often emphasized that profits should not come at the cost of ethics. His leadership style has influenced a generation of Indian entrepreneurs and business leaders. Wipro, under his watch, became known not just for technical excellence but for integrity and corporate responsibility.

Even after retiring from the executive role at Wipro in 2019, Premji continues to be deeply involved in philanthropic work. His son, Rishad Premji, now leads the company, while Azim devotes his time to the foundation. This transition reflects his commitment to sustainability in both business and philanthropy.

Azim Premji’s journey is a testament to the power of vision, values, and dedication. From transforming a cooking oil company into a global IT powerhouse to redefining philanthropy in India, his life embodies the idea that wealth and power come with the responsibility to give back. He has shown that it is possible to be a successful entrepreneur while being deeply committed to social good. His legacy will be remembered not just for the billions he made, but for the millions of lives he touched.
