Galaxy Z Fold 8 Leak Points to Missing Privacy Display

Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 8 lineup has moved a step closer to launch after the company confirmed the devices through recent regulatory filings. However, a new report from well-known Samsung tipster Ice Universe suggests that the 2026 foldable phones will not include one of the Galaxy S26 Ultra’s standout hardware features despite their expected premium pricing.

According to Ice Universe, the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra and Galaxy Z Flip 8 will launch without Samsung’s built-in privacy display technology. Responding to a question from a Korean user on X, the tipster stated, “The Fold 8, Fold 8 Ultra, and Flip 8 do not have privacy screens.” The feature is currently exclusive to the Galaxy S26 Ultra.

Unlike conventional aftermarket privacy screen protectors, Samsung’s privacy display is integrated directly into the Galaxy S26 Ultra’s panel using a hardware filter layer that limits side viewing angles. The feature can be adjusted from a light blur to a complete blackout and can also be applied only to selected areas of the display, such as PIN entry fields or sensitive notifications.

The omission is notable because Samsung’s next-generation foldables are expected to match or surpass the Galaxy S26 Ultra in many other areas. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is rumored to feature a 200-megapixel main camera, significantly improved display resolution and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor, positioning it as the company’s most advanced foldable smartphone.

Despite losing the privacy display, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is not expected to cost less. Samsung is reportedly preparing the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide as the entry-level book-style foldable, while the Ultra model will target the premium segment with additional hardware improvements. Previous leaks from Ice Universe have also pointed to a new 50-megapixel ultrawide camera and a substantially upgraded display for the Ultra version.

There has been no official explanation for the missing feature. One possibility is that integrating the privacy display into ultra-thin glass used on foldable screens presents technical challenges. Another is that Samsung believes the narrow outer display of a foldable device benefits less from the technology than the wider screen found on the Galaxy S26 Ultra.

Samsung’s current pricing also highlights the premium buyers pay for foldable devices. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 launched in the United States at $1,999.99 before recent price increases, while the Galaxy S26 Ultra starts at $1,299. The company has previously highlighted the privacy display when discussing the value offered by the Galaxy S26 series, and industry observers expect Samsung to provide more details about the Galaxy Z Fold 8 lineup during its Unpacked event in London next month.
