Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., has publicly addressed his recent hospitalization for the first time after nearly four weeks without updates, revealing that a fall was the reason he was admitted to the hospital. His prolonged absence had prompted growing questions about his health and calls for greater transparency regarding his condition.
In a statement released by his office on Sunday, McConnell thanked those who had expressed concern for his well-being as well as those who raised what he described as “honest questions” about why he had been away from the Senate. The announcement included a photograph showing the senator seated upright in a hospital bed alongside his wife, former Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao.
McConnell explained that he has lived with mobility challenges since childhood because of polio, adding that those difficulties have become more pronounced with age. He said a fall last month resulted in his hospitalization. According to the senator, doctors determined he had not suffered any broken bones, a concussion, heart attack, stroke, tumors, or hemorrhages. He also disclosed that he was briefly unconscious following the fall and later developed a mild case of pneumonia while receiving treatment in the hospital.
Although he said he is not yet ready to return to the Senate floor for votes, McConnell noted that he remains actively involved in legislative matters. He said he has continued working closely with his staff and staying in contact with fellow senators on issues including the appropriations process and midterm politics. He added that he intends to return to the Senate as soon as his recovery allows and will continue providing updates on his progress.
McConnell’s attending physician also released a statement, explaining that the senator has experienced several falls this year related to his post-polio condition. The doctor said the latest incident caused only minor injuries, and comprehensive medical evaluations found no fractures, heart abnormalities, stroke, tumors, or hemorrhages. The physician added that McConnell developed pneumonia early during his hospital stay but responded quickly to antibiotic treatment and is now fully participating in an intensive physical therapy program.
Separately, McConnell issued a statement on X mourning the death of Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C. He said, “Lindsey Graham was a good friend and a great American, and I was shocked and saddened by his passing.” McConnell added that Graham’s constituents and Senate colleagues relied on his direct approach, strong convictions, and determination, saying the Senate would miss him. He also said that he and Elaine Chao are keeping Graham’s family in their prayers.
