Palworld Continues to Outshine Pokémon in Several Key Areas

More than two years after its original release, Palworld continues to draw comparisons with Pokémon, with renewed attention focused on its gameplay strengths as well as its ongoing legal dispute with Nintendo. Revisiting the game after roughly two and a half years highlights changes believed to be linked to Nintendo’s patent lawsuits, including the removal of gliding with Pals and adjustments to how creatures are summoned into battle. Instead of throwing a ball, players now summon companions by raising a hand.

Beyond the courtroom battle, the rivalry has also fueled debate among gaming communities. Some dedicated Pokémon fans continue to criticize Palworld, describing it as an imitation of Nintendo’s long-running franchise or accusing it of borrowing too heavily from its designs. Others have even labeled the game “AI slop,” a phrase that has become increasingly common since the game’s debut.

Despite those criticisms, Palworld has earned recognition for combining mechanics from multiple genres into a distinct gameplay experience. While the game clearly draws inspiration from titles such as Pokémon and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, it also introduces its own mix of survival gameplay, open-world exploration, base construction, creature collection, breeding systems and real-time combat. Its continued popularity following the launch of version 1.0 suggests that players see it as more than a simple clone.

The comparison has also renewed discussion about the pace of innovation within the Pokémon franchise. Some players argue they had long hoped the series would evolve into a larger open-world adventure featuring action-focused combat instead of traditional turn-based battles. For many, Palworld delivers elements they had expected from Pokémon years ago.

Features such as cooperative multiplayer, extensive exploration, hidden discoveries, optimization through breeding, and battles against both creatures and human enemies have helped distinguish Palworld in the monster-collecting genre. The combination of these mechanics has contributed to strong player engagement and widespread interest in the game’s full release.

Although Pokémon remains one of the gaming industry’s most successful franchises and continues to perform well commercially, some players believe its recent releases have introduced only incremental changes. At the same time, Palworld has demonstrated how expanding the genre with new gameplay systems can appeal to players seeking a different experience. The two games continue to coexist, but the debate over innovation and gameplay remains active among fans.
