WhatsApp has started rolling out a major feature that allows users to connect through unique usernames instead of sharing their phone numbers. The update is designed to improve privacy and make it easier for people to communicate without revealing personal contact information. Although the full feature is expected to launch later this year, users can begin reserving their preferred usernames starting this week.
The company said the change addresses a common concern among users who are uncomfortable sharing their phone numbers with new contacts. In a blog post, WhatsApp noted that “A phone number is personal and it’s tied to so many parts of your life. Sometimes you just want to chat without handing over your digits.” With more than 3 billion users on the platform, the early reservation period is intended to give people a better chance of securing their preferred username before the wider rollout.
To help users find an available identity, WhatsApp has introduced a username generator that suggests unique options when a preferred name has already been taken. The new system is expected to simplify connecting with others while offering greater control over personal information.
The username feature is also intended to strengthen protection against common messaging scams. Fraudsters often impersonate friends or family members by claiming they have changed their phone number, but usernames are expected to make such scams more difficult. For businesses, creators and organizations, WhatsApp will also provide the option to reserve usernames that match their existing Instagram or Facebook identities, helping maintain consistent branding across Meta’s platforms.
Users who want to reserve a username must first update WhatsApp to the latest version. On iPhone, the option can be found by opening the App Store, checking for available updates, then navigating to the You tab, selecting Account, and choosing Username inside WhatsApp. Android users should update WhatsApp through the Google Play Store and then go to Settings, Account, and Username.
The rollout is being introduced gradually, meaning the feature may not appear immediately for every user. WhatsApp says availability will expand over time as the global launch continues.
