BMW has unveiled the fifth-generation X5, introducing the most extensive overhaul in the luxury SUV’s 27-year history. Built around the company’s Neue Klasse design and technology platform, the new X5 becomes BMW’s first model to offer five different powertrain choices globally, including petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid, fully electric and hydrogen variants.
The headline addition is the all-new BMW iX5, the first fully electric version of the X5. Scheduled to arrive in UK showrooms in spring 2027, the electric SUV is powered by BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive technology. The flagship iX5 60 xDrive features a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system producing 578hp and draws energy from a 141kWh usable battery. BMW claims a WLTP driving range of up to 525 miles, while DC fast charging supports speeds of up to 460kW. The vehicle also offers bidirectional charging, allowing power to be supplied back to a home or the electricity grid where supported. BMW has confirmed that an all-electric M Performance version will join the lineup later.
The plug-in hybrid range has also been upgraded with the X5 50e xDrive and performance-focused X5 M60e xDrive. Both models combine BMW’s latest turbocharged 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder petrol engine with a more powerful 197hp electric motor and a 26.5kWh usable lithium-ion battery. The setup enables up to 63 miles of electric-only driving under the WLTP cycle. The X5 M60e xDrive produces a combined 612hp and 800Nm of torque, allowing it to accelerate from 0 to 62mph in 4.5 seconds.
Diesel power remains part of the X5 lineup through the X5 40d xDrive. The updated model features a revised 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel engine with twin-stage turbocharging and a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. BMW says it delivers up to 670Nm of torque and fuel economy of as much as 40.4mpg under WLTP testing. The engine is also compatible with renewable HVO100 diesel, which the company says can reduce lifecycle CO₂ emissions by up to 90% compared with conventional diesel fuel.
BMW has also confirmed that the iX5 Hydrogen will become its first series-production hydrogen-powered model. Combining third-generation fuel-cell technology with a high-voltage battery and a new hydrogen storage system, the SUV is expected to deliver a driving range of up to 466 miles. While the hydrogen version will initially be offered only in selected markets, it forms part of BMW’s strategy of supporting multiple low-emission powertrain technologies.
The exterior adopts BMW’s latest Neue Klasse styling with a cleaner, more modern appearance. Highlights include the illuminated BMW Iconic Glow kidney grille, new double-X daytime running lights, flush body surfaces, electrically operated doors, redesigned Winglet door handles and slimmer rear lighting. Customers will be able to choose from 11 exterior paint finishes and alloy wheels measuring up to 23 inches, while M Sport, M Sport Pro and M Performance trims add progressively sportier styling.
Inside, the cabin has been completely redesigned around BMW’s latest digital technology. The dashboard features BMW Panoramic iDrive, integrating a central touchscreen, Panoramic Vision display, 3D head-up display and multifunction steering wheel into a unified interface. An optional passenger display is available for the first time, while premium materials, slate trim, glass detailing and X-pattern stitching create a more luxurious interior. Buyers can also specify BMW Individual Merino leather upholstery, ventilated and massage seats, four-zone climate control and an 18-speaker Bowers & Wilkins audio system with Dolby Atmos. Rear passengers benefit from an updated Travel & Comfort system that includes optional magnetic smartphone mounts.
BMW expects the M Sport trim to remain the most popular choice in the UK, featuring adaptive suspension, 21-inch alloy wheels, M Sport brakes and a more aggressive body kit. M Sport Pro adds 22-inch wheels, red brake calipers and exclusive styling details, while the X5 M60e xDrive receives unique M-specific lighting, an illuminated grille, quad exhaust outlets and additional exterior enhancements.
The new BMW X5 made its global debut at BMW Group’s Spartanburg manufacturing facility in South Carolina on June 30, 2026. UK sales of the fully electric iX5, plug-in hybrid X5 and diesel X5 are scheduled to begin in spring 2027. Petrol variants will be available in selected global markets, with the hydrogen-powered iX5 Hydrogen joining the international lineup at a later date.
