Selena Gomez Seeks Dismissal of Wondermind Fraud Lawsuit

Selena Gomez

Selena Gomez’s attorneys have asked a federal court to dismiss a securities fraud lawsuit filed by investors in her mental health startup Wondermind, describing the claims as “absurd” and warning that the case could warrant sanctions against the plaintiffs’ lawyers.

The motion, filed Wednesday in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware, seeks to throw out claims against Gomez, her mother Mandy Teefey and Wondermind co-founder Daniella Pierson. The investors allege they were misled about whether the company had the infrastructure, management and advertising agreements necessary to operate.

Gomez’s legal team argued that the allegations are so seriously flawed that they could trigger Rule 11 sanctions against the plaintiffs. Such sanctions can allow a court to penalize attorneys for bringing claims that fail to meet required legal standards.

The lawsuit was brought by Wondermind SRS 44 and Bespoke Wondermind SPV, limited liability companies that say they invested $1.2 billion in the startup. According to the investors, they made the investments after meetings with Wondermind’s co-CEOs, Pierson and Teefey, without Gomez directly participating in those discussions.

The investors also contend that Wondermind represented Gomez as someone who would be “intimately involved” in the company’s operations and marketing. Gomez’s attorneys dispute the basis for those allegations, pointing to the lawsuit’s own description of her role. They said Gomez was a minority shareholder and consultant and was not designated as a key employee under the stock purchase agreement.

In their filing, Gomez’s lawyers wrote that the plaintiffs rely on “vague, deficient theories” involving statements allegedly made about Gomez. They also challenged the suggestion that she failed to meet contractual responsibilities under an agreement between Gomez and Wondermind, noting that the investors had never seen that contract.

The lawsuit was filed Aug. 13 against Gomez, Pierson and Teefey. It accuses the defendants of misrepresenting Wondermind’s financial condition and Gomez’s expected role in the business. The complaint also questions Teefey’s fitness, citing a 2025 article that reported allegations involving mismanagement and substance abuse at the company.

Pierson faces additional allegations of securities fraud, conversion and unjust enrichment. The plaintiffs claim she misrepresented Wondermind’s growth prospects to attract investors and improperly used investor money for personal purposes.

Wondermind launched in 2022 as a mental health-focused platform built around a website and app offering articles, interviews and podcasts. By 2025, the company had reportedly exhausted its cash reserves and failed to pay employees. A separate report said the startup had reduced its workforce by nearly two-thirds while struggling with significant debt.
