Tom Holland’s India Box Office Success Holds Lessons for Hollywood

Tom Holland

Tom Holland has emerged as one of the biggest winners at the Indian box office this year, with two major films helping him achieve a rare level of success in a market where domestic productions typically dominate. “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” has become the highest-grossing Hollywood film ever released in India, while Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey,” which stars Holland as Prince Telemachus, delivered the director’s biggest opening weekend in the country.

“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” surpassed “Avatar: The Way of Water” after collecting $52.8 million through its second weekend. Its $31.8 million opening weekend also established a new record for the biggest opening period by a Hollywood film in India. Both films remain in theaters across the country, meaning their final totals could increase.

Holland’s Indian success has also coincided with a growing personal connection to the country. In 2023, he and Zendaya were among the Hollywood stars invited to the opening of the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre in Mumbai. Holland returned to the city in July for the Indian premiere of “The Odyssey,” appearing alongside Nolan. The event marked Nolan’s first Indian premiere for one of his films. “Finally being able to premiere a film here is a thrill,” Nolan said at a Mumbai press conference, adding, “I’ve never been anywhere in the world with an appreciation of what movies can be and what they should be.”

The scale of Holland’s success becomes clearer against the broader structure of India’s film industry. The country has the world’s largest theatrical market by admissions and offers an unusually diverse mix of regional and national-language productions. Domestic titles ranging from Bollywood franchises such as “Dhurandhar” to regional crossover releases such as “Peddi” generally account for most of the market.

According to an Ormax Media report released in July 2026, films in international languages represented only 8% of India’s gross domestic box office during the first half of the year. That makes the performance of Holland’s two films particularly notable because both have moved into territory generally occupied by Indian blockbusters.

India’s overall theatrical business has also enjoyed a strong year. “Dhurandhar: The Revenge” led the first half of 2026 with $132 million, while total box office revenue for the first six months reached $661.66 million. That figure represented the strongest first half since the pandemic and was about 10% higher than the same period in 2025. If the trend continues, Ormax projects that 2026 could become the best year ever for India’s box office.

“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” has also demonstrated that Hollywood success in India is not limited to major metropolitan audiences. The film has reached Tier II and Tier III markets, helped in part by the long-standing popularity of the Spider-Man franchise. Its Hindi-dubbed version performed particularly well, with Variety reporting 95% occupancy compared with 55% for the English-language version, despite the English version being shown in only about 1,000 more theaters.

The results offer a broader indication of India’s growing importance to Western entertainment companies. Major Hollywood franchises such as “Avengers” and “Avatar” have already demonstrated the country’s appetite for blockbuster properties, but the market’s potential extends beyond established film franchises.

Western entertainment companies have increasingly recognized the size and spending power of India’s young and middle-aged consumers, many of whom have a strong connection to Western pop culture and nostalgia. That interest extends to artists whose commercial peaks may have passed in their home markets, with acts such as Westlife and Akon continuing to attract audiences in India.

Music has provided another example of the country’s growing appetite for international entertainment. Coldplay’s 2025 performances in India set a record for the most-attended stadium concerts of the 21st century. An Ernst & Young report estimated that the band’s two concerts in Ahmedabad alone generated approximately ₹641 crore in economic impact.

A growing list of international performers has also visited India, including Ed Sheeran, Louis Tomlinson, Linkin Park, Justin Bieber, Akon, The Chainsmokers, The Foo Fighters, Tyla, Calvin Harris, John Mayer, Jacob Collier and Fred Again, along with an increasing number of K-pop acts.

Major Hollywood premieres in India remain relatively uncommon, partly because of limitations in the country’s film-experience infrastructure. Nolan’s “The Odyssey” premiere therefore stands out, much as the 2011 Indian screening of “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” did at the time. An Ernst & Young report published in 2026 found that 78% of Indian consumers prefer spending on experiences rather than products, reflecting a broader shift toward experience-driven consumption.

The growing connection between international entertainment and Indian audiences also extends to how artists engage with local culture. Dua Lipa demonstrated one version of that approach during her 2024 concert in India by performing a viral mashup combining her hit “Levitating” with “Woh Ladki Jo,” the Bollywood song from Shah Rukh Khan’s “Baadshah.”

The performances of Holland’s films suggest that India is becoming increasingly important not simply as another stop on a global promotional schedule, but as a market where cultural engagement can influence audience reach. “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” and “The Odyssey,” both starring Holland, continue to play in theaters worldwide.
