Google Gemini Surpasses 1 Billion Monthly Users

Google’s Gemini artificial intelligence assistant has surpassed 1 billion monthly active users, making it the company’s fastest-growing product to reach that milestone and placing it alongside OpenAI’s ChatGPT at the top of the consumer AI market.

Google announced the milestone Tuesday, less than a month after reporting that Gemini had reached 950 million monthly users in its latest earnings report. The rapid increase highlights the continued expansion of Google’s AI assistant across its broader ecosystem.

The company said 63% of Gemini users interact with the assistant using their voice rather than typing prompts. Google also found that busy parents are “43% more likely to use voice for everyday tasks.”

Screen sharing and live camera features are also becoming common ways of interacting with Gemini, with Google saying one in five user interactions involves either screen sharing or a live camera feed.

Apple users account for more than 100 million of Gemini’s monthly active users, according to Google. The company added that users on macOS send prompts roughly twice as frequently as users on other platforms.

Google’s stock declined 3.4% to $343.89 about an hour before Tuesday’s market close, putting the shares on track for an 8.4% drop over the previous five trading sessions. Despite the recent decline, Alphabet shares remained up 9.6% for the year.

Gemini is also being used heavily for image creation. Google said the assistant generates approximately 150 million images each day, with the company highlighting growing adoption of the image-generation feature among small businesses.

Google introduced the Gemini app in 2024 and has since integrated the AI assistant into several of its major products, including its web browser, Android smartphones and Google Workspace applications such as Drive, Docs and Sheets.

The milestone puts Gemini in direct competition with ChatGPT, which reached 1 billion monthly active users in May, becoming the first AI chatbot to achieve that level of usage. Anthropic’s Claude remains significantly smaller by comparison, but its user base has been expanding rapidly. Reuters reported that Claude had 56 million global monthly active users in the second quarter of this year, representing a 640% increase from the same period a year earlier.
