Trump Supports Speaker Johnson Amid GOP Pressure

Johnson Joins Trump at Mar-a-Lago for Election Integrity Announcement

In a recent joint press conference with House Speaker Mike Johnson, former President Donald Trump made clear his support for the embattled speaker, emphasizing his positive working relationship with Johnson. The show of solidarity comes as Johnson faces mounting pressure from within the GOP, particularly from far-right members led by Trump ally Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who has been pushing for a motion to vacate against Johnson.

Trump’s comments underscored his close ties with both Johnson and Greene, despite recent tensions within the party. He praised Johnson’s leadership, stating that he is “doing a very good job” and highlighting Greene’s respect for the speaker. However, Trump also expressed his disappointment over the motion to vacate, suggesting that it is unfortunate that the issue continues to be raised, possibly alluding to the removal of Johnson’s predecessor, former Speaker Kevin McCarthy.

On the other side of the debate, Greene, known for her outspoken views as a former member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, filed the motion to vacate Johnson from the speakership last month. Her criticism stemmed from Johnson’s decision to bring a $1.2 trillion funding package to the House floor, a move that Greene and other far-right members opposed due to concerns about increased federal spending and its alignment with Democratic priorities.

Johnson’s ascent to the speakership in October came after a three-week government impasse following McCarthy’s removal, also driven by far-right objections over spending. The selection process for a new GOP candidate saw Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, as a leading contender, although he ultimately lost in three consecutive votes. Other contenders, including Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., and Rep. Tom Emmer, R-Minn., withdrew from the race, with Emmer facing criticism from the far-right and Trump, who labeled him a “RINO” globalist.

In a tangential development, Trump also announced plans to testify in his upcoming New York criminal trial regarding alleged hush money payments to former adult film star Stormy Daniels. Despite attempts to delay the trial, Trump has maintained his innocence, pleading not guilty to the 34 felony counts he faces.
