In a significant retail development announced on January 13, 2025, Wegmans Food Markets confirmed its long-awaited entry into the Pittsburgh market with plans to open a 115,000-square-foot store in Cranberry Township. The new location will be situated on Cool Springs Drive, adjacent to the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, marking a historic expansion for the Rochester-based grocery chain.
The announcement comes after decades of customer requests, with Dan Aken, Wegmans’ vice president of real estate and store planning, noting that they’ve received thousands of appeals for a Pittsburgh location over the past 30 years. The store will be part of the broader Cranberry Springs development, which encompasses commercial, residential, office, and retail facilities.
This expansion represents a significant milestone for Wegmans, which currently operates 111 stores across eight states and Washington, D.C. The new Cranberry location will join 19 existing Pennsylvania stores, with the closest current locations being in Erie and State College.
The store promises to deliver Wegmans’ signature offerings, including an extensive produce department, bakery goods, deli products, and a comprehensive selection of wine and beer. Employment opportunities will be substantial, with plans to hire 400 to 500 people, primarily from the local community.
Cranberry Township Manager Daniel Santoro expressed enthusiasm about the development, welcoming Wegmans as a valuable addition to the community. The store will be constructed on 13 acres of land owned by developer Gary Sippel, joining other established businesses in the area such as TownePlace Suites by Marriott, Burgatory, and Firebirds Wood Fired Grill.
While the construction timeline and opening date remain undetermined, the announcement has generated considerable excitement among local residents, including a Facebook group of over 300 members who had been advocating for Wegmans’ arrival in Pittsburgh.
