2026 Lexus GX 550 Delivers Luxury With Serious Off-Road Ability

The 2026 Lexus GX 550 returns for the new model year without significant updates, continuing to offer a blend of premium comfort, rugged capability and strong towing performance. Built on a body-on-frame platform with full-time four-wheel drive, the SUV remains aimed at families and adventure seekers who want a luxury vehicle capable of handling challenging terrain and towing heavy loads.

Power comes from a 3.4-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine producing 349 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. The GX 550 can tow up to 9,000 pounds, making it suitable for hauling boats and trailers. Fuel economy remains one of its weaker points, with EPA estimates of 15 mpg in the city, 21 mpg on the highway and 17 mpg combined. Pricing starts at approximately $66,935, including destination charges, while higher trim levels climb into the low-$80,000 range before optional equipment.

The SUV retains its bold, upright styling with a squared front end, high beltline and commanding stance that gives it a modern yet purposeful appearance. Inside, the cabin offers generous passenger space and a practical layout, featuring a horizontal dashboard design, an elevated driving position and an available third-row seat for larger families. Heated and ventilated front seats, optional captain’s chairs, premium audio and upscale materials reinforce its luxury credentials.

Technology remains a key highlight with a 14-inch infotainment touchscreen, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, available wireless charging and the Lexus Safety System 3.0+. The standard safety package includes adaptive cruise control, lane-centering assistance, road-sign recognition, automatic emergency braking and several additional driver-assistance technologies.

On the road, the GX 550 emphasizes confidence and comfort rather than sporty handling. Its twin-turbo V6 delivers strong low-end torque, while the suspension provides a composed ride over rough pavement, steep grades and uneven roads. The SUV is designed to handle long-distance travel and difficult conditions with ease rather than prioritize aggressive performance.

Despite its strengths, the GX 550 has a few drawbacks. Fuel efficiency is below average, the vehicle’s substantial weight is noticeable during everyday driving, and the most advanced off-road equipment is reserved for higher-priced trim levels.

Overall, the 2026 Lexus GX 550 continues to focus on what it does best: combining luxury, durability and genuine off-road capability. It delivers a refined daily driving experience while retaining the mechanical toughness needed for mud, snow, rocky trails and demanding road conditions.
