Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., remains hospitalized more than two weeks after he was discovered unconscious at his Washington, D.C., residence, as questions continue surrounding the health of the 84-year-old lawmaker.
A spokesperson for McConnell said the senator is recovering in the hospital, adding that he “continues to improve, and is working closely with his staff on Kentucky and Senate matters while the Senate is out of session.” While his office has confirmed he remains engaged with Senate business, no details have been released about his long-term prognosis.
According to NBC News, citing police scanner audio, paramedics responded to an incident involving a person suffering a cardiac arrest at an address associated with McConnell and performed CPR before transporting the individual. Punchbowl News and the New York Post previously reported that McConnell was found unconscious on the morning of June 14 and was taken to a local hospital in an Advanced Life Support ambulance.
McConnell’s office has not commented on an emergency dispatch recording shared Tuesday by journalist Desiree Townsend. Last month, a representative for the senator confirmed he had been admitted to the hospital and was receiving “excellent care.” A week later, the office said he had resumed working closely with staff on Senate matters while continuing his recovery.
This marks McConnell’s second hospitalization of the year. About four-and-a-half months ago, he was admitted with flu-like symptoms, remained hospitalized for roughly a week, received what his office described as a positive prognosis, and soon returned to the Senate.
McConnell has announced he will leave Congress when his seventh Senate term ends in January, concluding 42 years of service in the chamber. His seat is being contested in the upcoming midterm elections, with Rep. Andy Barr, R-Ky., facing former Rep. Charles Booker, D-Ky., in a race where Barr is widely considered the favorite.
The longtime Kentucky senator served as the Senate’s Republican leader from 2007 to 2025 and has experienced several high-profile health issues in recent years. In 2023, he suffered a concussion and fractured rib after a fall, followed by another fall in 2024 that caused leg stiffness and kept him away from Congress for a period. His office has said his occasional use of a wheelchair is related to lingering effects of polio from childhood. McConnell also experienced two widely publicized episodes in which he froze while speaking to reporters. Although his team attributed the incidents to feeling lightheaded, neurologists who reviewed the footage suggested they were more likely mini seizures. His 18-year tenure as Senate Republican leader remains the longest for a party leader in the chamber’s history.
