House Democrats Push for Navy Federal Credit Union Probe

Navy Federal Credit Union

A group of House Democrats is pushing for an investigation into Navy Federal Credit Union (NFCU), the nation’s largest credit union, over allegations of racially discriminatory lending practices. The lawmakers, including members of the New Democrat Coalition and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, sent letters to federal regulators urging them to look into the matter.

The allegations against NFCU, which provides financial services to veterans and active servicemembers, were first reported by CNN. According to the report, there were disparities in mortgage approval rates between nonwhite applicants and white applicants. While NFCU has denied these claims, lawmakers are calling for a thorough investigation into the matter.

In their letters to federal regulators and NFCU’s CEO Mary McDuffie, the lawmakers expressed concerns about potential violations of the Equal Credit Opportunity Act and the Fair Housing Act. They cited a CNN report that analyzed data from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and found a pattern of disparate treatment towards nonwhite applicants.

While NFCU has stated that a preliminary analysis shows only a small difference in approval rates when considering other factors such as credit score and income, lawmakers believe that further investigation is warranted. They are calling on regulators to provide insight into how they identify fair lending risks and potential illegal discrimination in underwriting at credit unions.

NFCU, founded in 1933, serves millions of servicemembers and veterans worldwide. However, the credit union has faced complaints in the past, including a 2016 order from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau to pay $28.5 million for improper debt collection practices. A 2021 report from The Markup also highlighted disparities in lending practices at NFCU.

In response to the allegations, NFCU announced that it is closely examining the claims and has hired an independent consultant to review its lending policies. Additionally, a lawsuit has been filed against NFCU in a Virginia federal court on behalf of two Black plaintiffs who had their mortgage applications denied. The lawsuit alleges violations of the Equal Credit Opportunity Act and the Fair Housing Act.

NFCU, with assets totaling $170.8 billion, has a significant presence in the financial industry. However, these allegations of racial discrimination could have serious implications for the credit union if they are proven to be true. The House Democrats’ call for an investigation underscores the importance of fair lending practices and the need to address any potential discrimination in the financial sector.
