Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” will arrive on digital platforms and physical media on Nov. 17, following a record-setting theatrical run that has pushed the Homer adaptation to $1.352 billion worldwide.
The film, written and directed by Nolan and starring Matt Damon as Odysseus, opened in 3,919 North American theaters from July 17-19 and collected nearly $124 million during its debut weekend. It remained the top film at the North American box office for a second weekend before “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” opened July 31.
Universal Pictures announced Thursday that “The Odyssey” had become the highest-grossing R-rated film in history after its worldwide ticket sales reached $1.352 billion. The previous record was held by Disney-owned 20th Century Studios’ “Deadpool & Wolverine,” which grossed $1.338 billion worldwide in 2024.
Variety reported that Universal will make “The Odyssey” available through premium video on demand beginning Tuesday, Nov. 17. The same date will mark its release on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD. The movie is expected to be offered for both digital purchase and rental, although pricing has not been announced.
New PVOD releases commonly sell for about $19.99 to $29.99 and rent for roughly $14.99 to $24.99 for a 48-hour period. Digital purchases and rentals are generally offered through services including Apple TV, Fandango at Home, Prime Video and YouTube Movies & TV.
“The Odyssey” follows Odysseus, played by Damon, as the King of Ithaca attempts to return home to his wife, Queen Penelope, portrayed by Anne Hathaway, and their son, Prince Telemachus, played by Tom Holland, after the Trojan War. The large ensemble cast also features Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Lupita Nyong’o, Himesh Patel, Jon Bernthal, Elliot Page, John Leguizamo, Mia Goth, Benny Safdie, Corey Hawkins, James Remar and the voice of Bill Irwin.
The film has also received strong reviews. Its Rotten Tomatoes critics’ score currently stands at 94% “fresh” from 500 reviews, while verified audiences have given it a 97% score through the site’s Popcornmeter based on more than 25,000 ratings. The movie initially launched with a 98% critics’ score from 145 reviews.
As of Friday, “The Odyssey” remained in 3,091 North American theaters, giving the film a continued theatrical presence ahead of its November home release.
