John Bolton Pleads Guilty in Classified Information Case

John Bolton was in court Friday to plead guilty.

Former National Security Adviser John Bolton pleaded guilty on Friday to illegally retaining classified information, marking a significant legal victory for the Justice Department under President Donald Trump’s administration. Bolton, who served during Trump’s first term before becoming one of his most outspoken critics, admitted to a single count as part of a plea agreement.

Prosecutors had originally filed an 18-count indictment accusing Bolton of unlawfully keeping more than 1,000 pages of notes containing sensitive national security information. Court records alleged that he also shared portions of those materials with his wife and daughter.

Under the plea agreement, Bolton could face a maximum prison sentence of five years and has agreed to pay a $2.25 million fine. However, the Associated Press reported that the agreement could allow him to avoid serving time in prison. He is scheduled to be sentenced on Oct. 28 by U.S. District Judge Theodore Chuang in federal court in Maryland.

During the court hearing, Judge Theodore Chuang asked Bolton whether he was guilty of the charge. Bolton replied, “I am your honor, and I’m sorry for it.”

Bolton had previously entered a not guilty plea after the indictment was announced in October, arguing that he had become the “latest target in weaponizing the Justice Department to charge those [Trump] deems to be his enemies.”

According to prosecutors, Bolton shared “diary-like” summaries of his work as national security adviser with family members through a personal email account that was later allegedly hacked by an individual believed to have ties to the Iranian government. Investigators said the emails included intelligence regarding former adversaries and covert government activities. The indictment also alleged Bolton sent one document to a relative before warning, “None of which we talk about!!!,” to which the recipient responded, “Shhhhh.” FBI agents later searched Bolton’s Washington office and his home in Bethesda, Maryland, recovering documents marked classified or secret.

Bolton’s indictment came shortly after separate cases were brought against former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James, both critics of Trump. Those charges were later dismissed after a federal judge ruled that Lindsey Halligan, a Trump ally with no previous prosecutorial experience, had been unlawfully appointed as a U.S. attorney. Comey was later indicted again in April over an Instagram post featuring seashells arranged to spell “86 47,” which Trump and members of his administration interpreted as a threat against the president. Some legal experts viewed the allegations against Bolton as more substantial, while the cases involving Comey and James were widely seen by observers as politically motivated.

A veteran national security official and attorney, Bolton served in several Republican administrations, from Ronald Reagan through Donald Trump. He was national security adviser from 2018 until 2019, when Trump announced his dismissal following disagreements over foreign policy, while Bolton maintained that he resigned. In 2020, Bolton published The Room Where It Happened, a memoir sharply criticizing Trump’s leadership. In the book, he described Trump as “stunningly uninformed” about governing and foreign affairs, accused him of offering “personal favors to dictators he liked,” and wrote that many of Trump’s major decisions during Bolton’s tenure appeared to be driven by reelection concerns.
