A consortium that includes Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has agreed to acquire a minority stake of about 30% in Liverpool FC, marking Bezos’ first investment in a sports franchise. Fenway Sports Group, Liverpool’s majority owner, confirmed the strategic investment on Friday, August 14, 2026.
The investment group, known as 1892 Holdings, is led by businessman Amit Bhatia and includes Bezos, Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin, the Mittal Family Trusts, EE Capital and K5 Sports. Bhatia will become Liverpool’s vice chairman and join the club’s expanded board, while Bezos will remain a non-board investor.
The consortium is acquiring roughly one-third of the club in a transaction valued at more than £1.5 billion. The agreement puts Liverpool’s valuation at more than £5 billion, or around $7 billion, with other reports putting the value at approximately $7.4 billion.
Fenway Sports Group will remain Liverpool’s majority owner and retain operational control of the club. The agreement also gives the investor group an option that could allow it to become the majority shareholder within the next 12 months, at a valuation reported to be around $8 billion.
The deal brings several prominent billionaires and investment groups into Liverpool’s ownership structure. Bezos is among the world’s wealthiest people, while Saverin, a Facebook co-founder, has built a multibillion-dollar fortune. The consortium also includes interests associated with the Mittal family, whose wealth was built largely through the steel industry and ArcelorMittal.
Bezos’ investment represents his first move into soccer ownership. The Amazon founder has previously been linked with potential investments in sports franchises, but the Liverpool transaction marks his first confirmed investment in a professional sports team.
Fenway Sports Group purchased Liverpool in 2010 for about $406 million, taking control of a club that was dealing with substantial debt under former American owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett. Under FSG, Liverpool experienced periods of inconsistent performance before manager Jürgen Klopp guided the club to a Premier League title in 2019. The team later won another Premier League championship in the 2024-25 season.
Liverpool has since remained among the leading clubs in English soccer. Earlier this year, the club was ranked fourth among the world’s most valuable soccer teams, with an estimated value of $6.2 billion.
