Obama Says Trump’s Focus on Him Reflects Misplaced Priorities

Former President Barack Obama has criticized President Donald Trump over what he described as an ongoing fixation on him and his family, calling it an unusual distraction from the responsibilities of leading the country. The remarks came during an episode of the “All the Smoke” podcast released on Wednesday, marking one of Obama’s rare direct public criticisms of Trump as political attention increasingly shifts toward this year’s midterm elections.

Speaking during the interview, Obama said Trump’s repeated references to him amount to an “obsession” and described it as “a strange thing,” adding, “I obviously have a room in his head.” Obama contrasted that approach with his own time in office, saying he never spent time worrying about comments from political opponents or the actions of his predecessor because his attention was focused on governing. “The last thing” he had time for as president “was worry about what somebody said, or what my predecessor did,” he said, adding, “They’re gone, I’ve got work to do.”

Obama argued that Trump’s continued attacks on him demonstrate a lack of focus on the American public and the responsibilities of the presidency. He also remarked, “The idea that I’d be worrying about somebody who came before and me trying to measure like, ‘What’s he done today?’ and constantly worrying about that is a strange thing to me.”

The former president’s comments follow additional criticism from the Obamas during the recent opening of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago. Former First Lady Michelle Obama appeared to take aim at Trump by referencing her husband’s Nobel Peace Prize, drawing applause from the audience. Trump, who has repeatedly argued that he deserved the Nobel Peace Prize, was presented with the medal by Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, while Barack Obama received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009.

During the same event, Barack Obama also emphasized democratic principles without directly mentioning Trump, saying the United States would have “no kings or lords” and highlighting the importance of shared democratic values and the peaceful transfer of power following free and fair elections. In a separate interview with NBC before the center’s opening, Obama suggested the country could be “worse off” following Trump’s decision to launch military action against Iran in February, pointing to the financial costs, strain on the military, and loss of life.

Trump has repeatedly targeted Barack Obama in recent months. Among those attacks were an AI-generated Truth Social post portraying the Obama Presidential Center as a trash can and accusations in May that Obama was a “traitor” who should be arrested over claims that he plotted a coup. Earlier this year, Trump also shared an AI-generated video depicting Barack and Michelle Obama as gorillas before later deleting the post. The video drew criticism from Republican leaders, with Sen. Tim Scott calling it “the most racist thing I’ve seen out of this White House.”
