The first episode of DC’s “Lanterns” appears to contain a subtle connection to Batman and Gotham City, even though the Caped Crusader is not expected to appear in the series. The reference comes through Sheriff Kerry Kane, whose name and apparent ties to Gotham could point to a deeper connection within the DC Universe.
The first clue arrives during a brief exchange involving Kerry and a police commissioner. At the end of a phone call, Kerry says, “Tell Barb I said hey.” In Batman lore, Commissioner Jim Gordon’s wife and daughter are both named Barbara, with his daughter Barbara Gordon eventually becoming Batgirl.
Kerry’s surname provides another possible link. The Kane family is an established wealthy dynasty in Gotham and is closely connected to Bruce Wayne’s family history. Martha Kane, Bruce Wayne’s mother, became Martha Wayne after marrying Thomas Wayne. Kate Kane, meanwhile, is Bruce’s maternal first cousin and later becomes Batwoman. Batman comics have introduced at least half a dozen other characters from the Kane family, although none is known as Kerry Kane.
There is also a possible real-world reference behind the character’s name. Kerry Kane could potentially be a nod to Bob Kane, the comic-book figure traditionally credited as the creator of Batman. Within the fictional DC universe, however, Kerry having the Kane surname while maintaining contacts in Gotham could be more than a coincidence.
There is no indication that Batman himself is set to appear in “Lanterns.” The character reportedly has not been cast, and major comic-book productions often generate casting information well before a character’s arrival. The references may instead be intended to broaden the connections between different parts of the DC Universe.
Kerry’s apparent connection to Gotham could still become more significant as the series continues. Her attitude toward superheroes, including her apparent hostility toward them, could potentially provide more context for the character, although the first episode does not establish that her Gotham connection will become a major storyline.
“Lanterns” has received strong early reactions from both critics and viewers. Critics, who have seen nearly the entire season, have given the series a 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences have so far based their responses primarily on the pilot episode. The reception stands out among recent DC and Marvel productions and follows the poor performance of “Supergirl.”
The series is scheduled to continue with weekly episodes through October. James Gunn has said the final episodes are among his favorites, with additional major revelations expected as the story progresses. However, a Batman appearance does not appear to be among the anticipated developments.
