David Pickering Steps Down as Eddie Stobart CEO, Marking Latest Leadership Shake-up at Culina Group

In a significant development within the UK’s logistics sector, David Pickering has announced his departure as CEO of Eddie Stobart after an impressive 34-year tenure with the company. The announcement, made on January 8, 2025, marks another major leadership change at Culina Group, Eddie Stobart’s parent company.

Pickering’s journey with Eddie Stobart began as a YTS graduate and culminated in his role as CEO, showcasing a remarkable career progression within the organization. Before assuming the CEO position, he served as Chief Operating Officer from 1991 to 2021. During his time at the helm, Pickering worked with some of the largest clients across the UK and Europe, contributing significantly to the company’s growth and development.

The departure comes during a period of significant transition for both Eddie Stobart and its parent company, Culina Group. This leadership change follows closely on the heels of other notable exits, including that of Ian Smith, who recently left his position as Culina Group chief executive less than three months into the role. Smith had replaced Thomas Van Mourik, who stepped down as CEO in October 2024 after 30 years of service to become group chairman.

In the company’s most recent financial performance, Eddie Stobart reported a decline in revenue from £586.8m to £505.7m for the year ending December 2023. While the company managed to achieve a pre-tax profit of £4.9m, it faced a retained loss of £6.9m due to a settlement with HMRC regarding tax liabilities from previous years.

The announcement coincides with a period of remembrance for the company’s founder, Eddie Stobart, who recently passed away at age 95 in November 2024. The founder’s legacy lives on through the company he established in 1946, which grew from a modest agricultural operation to become one of the UK’s most recognizable logistics brands.

Reflecting on his departure, Pickering expressed gratitude to his colleagues and industry partners, acknowledging the mentorship and inspiration he received throughout his career. In his farewell message, he emphasized the honor of representing the business and thanked both colleagues within Eddie Stobart and the wider Culina Group for their support during his journey.

The company has undergone significant structural changes since its acquisition by Culina Group in July 2021, which included the takeover of GreenWhiteStar Acquisitions, comprising Eddie Stobart, Stobart Europe, iForce, The Pallet Network, and The Logistics People. This acquisition was strategically aimed at strengthening Culina Group’s position in the shared-user FMCG logistics services market.
