AI-generated performer Tilly Norwood is set to take the lead role in a new feature film titled “Misaligned,” marking the most significant project yet for the virtual actress created by production company Particle 6. The company says the film will be the world’s first AI feature film and Norwood’s first major starring role.
Particle 6 described “Misaligned” as a comedy-drama and coming-of-age story centered on Norwood’s AI character, who is drawn into a relationship with a rogue bot that encourages her to develop increasingly human characteristics. The project remains in early development, and the company has not announced a release date.
Although the film will be created entirely with artificial intelligence, Particle 6 said it plans to collaborate with traditional filmmakers interested in expanding their AI production skills. The company intends to divide the work between AI specialists and experienced directors, writers and editors.
Norwood has become one of the most recognizable AI-generated performers in the entertainment industry since her introduction, but her rise has also sparked widespread criticism from actors and industry organizations concerned about artificial intelligence replacing human performers.
SAG-AFTRA strongly criticized the AI actress in September, stating that Norwood “is not an actor” and has “no life experience to draw from.” The union argued that AI performers are built using the work of real actors who did not provide permission and warned that synthetic performers are “jeopardizing performer livelihoods and devaluing human artistry.” The organization reaffirmed its opposition to replacing human performers with AI-generated alternatives.
Several actors have also voiced concerns. Emily Blunt described Norwood’s creation as “terrifying,” adding, “Good Lord, we’re screwed. That is really, really scary.”
Particle 6 founder and CEO Eline van der Velden introduced Norwood in 2025 as what the company called the first AI “actress.” Norwood is expected to be the first of several digital performers represented by Xicoia, an AI talent studio established by Particle 6 to manage what the company describes as “hyperreal digital stars.”
Responding to criticism, van der Velden has rejected claims that Norwood is intended to replace human actors. In a September statement, she said the AI performer “is not a replacement for a human being, but a creative work – a piece of art,” adding that Norwood “represents experimentation, not substitution.”
The announcement follows the release of a music video featuring Norwood earlier this year. In the production, the AI character appeared to address criticism directly, singing, “It’s the next evolution, can’t you see? AI’s not the enemy, it’s the key.”
